Once when I was working as a check-in agent a guy showed up to board with his passport expired less than a week before his flight, he had bought his ticket 11 months before the flight….
Passports often need to be renewed 6 months before expiry as some countries will not accept you potentially being in the country with an expired passport.
Also renewed my passport just before Christmas, if the rest of government worked like the passport department we would live in a utopia.
