On January 1, 2025, 23-year-old volunteer Pavlo Matviiets, a member of the NGO “Strong Because Free,” was killed in a Russian shelling of Kherson.

This was reported by Roman Mrochko, the head of the Kherson Military Administration.

According to Mrochko, Pavlo Matviiets helped deliver household appliances, food, and hygiene kits to Kherson residents affected by Russian attacks. Alongside city military administration workers, he cleared rubble and removed construction debris after the shelling.

“Many Kherson residents will remember his cheerful nature and his big yellow-and-blue heart. This is a tremendous loss for his family, the team of ‘Strong Because Free,’ the entire Kherson community, and the volunteer network,” Mrochko wrote.

Pavlo’s last social media post was last night, wishing everyone a happy new year.
