    1. The only way Trump can hover is if he borrowed Baron Harkonen’s suspensor girdle.

    2. Is full independence even possible with population of 57,000 and heavy reliance on Danish subsidies? A takeover from Trump looks much more likely tbh.

EDIT: Also, what’s with the red flag, Greenland homies? You’re kidding.

No offence, but the whole Greenlandic independence idea and its propagators are giving me cult vibes. Yeah they are very special and unique, but independence is irrational.

    4. Past_Reading_6651 on

That’s fine if independence means Denmark stops supporting them. Without it its entirely unrealistic.

Greenland is the only place in the Americas that still has its original people, language and culture left.

Is Egede sincere or just looking to fill his own pockets and sells his people to highest bidder. What does independence really mean?

That’s what comes next after trump’s “jokes”, “unrealistic fantasies” or “delusions”.

      >Greenland, the world’s largest island with a population of around 60,000

      >Despite its rich mineral resources, Greenland relies on Copenhagen for significant financial assistance, receiving an annual subsidy of around €500 million.

      >

So that’s 8 kEuro per inhabitant. I’m sure Trump is willling to double that … for some small gestures in return.

I like how they think they can get more free money and welfare from America than Denmark.
      Good luck boys.

Imagine, if Trump invades Greenland and Panama, in response, China invades Taiwan and Russia uses nukes in Ukraine, while everyone voted so that Trump would avoid WW3

Yeah, I don’t think independence from Denmark should be something to look after for now, my guy. Maybe after the manchild leaves the White House.

Imagine Putin saying “We need Greenland, Canada and the Panama Canal to protect our interest” with a big fat smirk, “Allied” forces would go directly to defcon 1, but Trump saying the same, no one dares to react.

Denmark spends billions on the defense of Greenland every year, plus the subsidies of their government. I would assume we would reduce subsidies and defense, if it wasn’t part of the kingdom anymore.

All 3 major powers have shown interest in Greenland, due to minerals, shipping routes and a potential landmass if climate change continues. So if they do get independence I would assume other powers will start trying to influence them immediately.

But honestly, they will probably get independence sooner or later – I just hope they build their economy a bit more before they do. At the moment their exports are like 92% fishing: [https://tradingeconomics.com/greenland/exports-by-category](https://tradingeconomics.com/greenland/exports-by-category)

Perhaps he sees an excellent opportunity to become multimillionaire in one bang.

As a Dane, I say sure. If that’s what they want… I’m not really sure what they want from it though.

Greenland has some massive economic and social problems. Granted, some of it created by Denmark way back… But Denmark is now pumping money into the country, trying to deal with those problems.

I find it hard to believe they, as of right now, can stand on their own, with no help from the kingdom… So they would have to “join” the US… Or Russia… and seeing how they deal with places like Puerto Rico and other “less fortunate” places within their own territory, I don’t think Greenland should hope for much.

Joining any of the big nations, they would be mined to shit… And left to deal with the aftermath themselves.

    14. KaZaA4LiFe on

Would be lovely. They are nothing but an expense to Denmark, and don’t really contribute anything really.

As an outsider on this topic is interesting to see second (?) topic on this matter for one morning and on the top of that bots(?) salivating over the idea of the americans and Trump acquiring Greenland.

One of the many negatives from the russian invasion of Ukraine was that it will normalise reshaping borders and conquering new lands. It seems it worked in the brains of many… So we are basically throwing in the trash all the progress from the past 3-4 centuries and we are returning to the times when one “king” can decide that he wants more territory and a lot of “peasant” will cheer and die for him…. Just great 👍

Greenlandic independence would be another entry in the hall of fame for self-inflicted catastrophes and leopards eating faces.

    18. myrainyday on

If people of Greenland want to be independent or become a state of US themselves it’s fine I guess. But if it’s because of pressure from Trump – then it’s complicated.

Isn’t Denmark one of the richest countries in the world?

    20. notmoffat on

I posted a while ago that if you really wanted to disrupt the Arctic and world in general, Billionaires funding sovereignty movements in Greenland and Nunavut in  exchange for access to resources would be the way to go.

    21. Poor Greenlandic people, such a small community being sold for greedy people. They will watch their country being destroyed by the corrupt and incompetent politicians.

    22. swiwwcheese on

Well Greenland, with the greediest and most anti-democratic powers drooling over your land and resources; good luck keeping your independence the day you achieve it…

    23. rtfcandlearntherules on

If they leave denmark they lose like half their gdp, because the Danish would obviously stop giving out handouts to them. It’s another case of “let’s shoot ourselves in the foot”, like like Brexit or Cataloniexit.

    24. Wrong title.
Greenland’s leaders want independence because someone promised them a lot of money

    25. TheCambrian91 on

Might as well sell it then.

Like when a footballer has 1 year left on his contract.

    26. NormalUse856 on

Correction: Elon and Trump has offered him money to make those claims so that they can buy Greenland once it achieves independence.
