      Releasing someone like this back into society just sets them up for the same failure.

      Needs to be in some sort of controlled environment where there is no access to alcohol.

      He’s in Midlands but from Kerry so he’s obviously a sex offender too as they are all housed in Midlands

      He should never see what’s on the outside of a prison wall again. Lock him up until he passes away in his cell.

      Are people who are commenting reading the article?

      Im usually the person arguing for harsher sentencing but I’m surprised so many people feel so strongly that this man should be locked up for good considering the background to the whole story. (Clear addiction problems, non violent crimes)

      This guy should be locked up – not in some nasty jail, it in a place where he’s safe, but has no access to drink.
      I’d lock up all of the junkies on the streets of Dublin in the same place

      Comments full of people proposing flawed absolute solutions. 

      If you allow people like this to be locked up indefinitely for petty crime, it’s a human rights abuse. If you do nothing,  it’s a human rights abuse. You can’t force addiction treatment because that doesn’t work. You can’t lock someone up in a mental institution for addiction like this – the law specifically forbids it.

      The reality is: hard cases make bad law, and there’s no easy solution to a case like this. Just dozens of trained professionals,  family members,  friends and neighbours who are doing their best. Eventually he’ll get sick and die, and that’ll be the end of it.
