Once failed to a bulb not being installed correctly, €27 for the retest. It’s a money grab plain and simple and it’ll continue to be
I despise the NCT. I don’t even have a car but (like most other things in this country) it’s punitive as fuck.
They should really use the UK model. Let’s qualified mechanics check the car out
The MOT system in the UK is arguably superior. Instead of two years checks most cars have to be approved every year as a medium sized garages can get the equipment to do it so there is no massive national waiting lists.
The current NCT system is something of a cash grab for the Spanish company that runs it.
I can see why not a lot of people just do the obvious stuff like headlights and brakes et cetera bring into the centre and get the list. A lot of cars fail on some suspension issues the most pre-nct checks cannot test properly.
They’ll always be able to find something to fail it on and there’s no recourse for it. It’s very inconsistent. As well as that, the current crowd don’t have the capacity for the number of tests they need to do. They don’t follow their own customer charter either.
The biggest reason for this is because they retest cost has doubled from 20 up to 40. Cars are deliberately getting failed so they can cash in on the 40e retest, so this brings the cost up to 100e to pass the nct.

So the NCT is operating as intended.

Then i put it into NCT (Dec)
I don’t do anything except clean it, check lights etc.
pointless.
I did a preNct when i first got a car and it failed anyway.
Everyone I know puts it through to find out what’s wrong with it.
I am a mechanic
And I got caught out before with pre nct inspection, so I don’t bother anymore check lights & levels send them straight in then let them say what a car needs
And before anyone says anything it’s the people with the most “flashy” cars are the worst
Can afford the car can’t afford to maintain them
I wonder how electric cars fair in the NCT.
2 ways to read this article:
1) 50% of cars found to be unroadworthy (not going into specifics on why- rusted chassis/blown number plate bulb)
2) NCT testers are doing their job and finding faults with cars, improving the quality of older cars on the road.
I prefer the second way myself.

So it’s a *true* failure rate of (probably far less than) 10%.
If a garage offered a pre test check that covered being brought back for anything that fails in the actual NCT i would do it. The pre tests atm are just a cash grab
Put my car through the NCT recently and it failed on tinted windows, even though I had the car tested 3 time previously (once when bringing it in from the North and twice as regular tests afterwards) and they were never an issue. I asked the tester why they weren’t an issue before and his response was “Well they failed this time”.
Got the tints removed, paid for the retest and it passed.
My 2010 Octavia sailed through the NCT last month. Couldn’t believe it.
Not surprising. Its a money spinner. Nothing to do with safety.
