    2. Ban Trump from entering EU and greenland ban MAGA ban Elon Musk ban every person associated with MAGA and Elon Musk. Problem solved

Ok so just to not stoke hysteria, do I get this right?

Greenland is undergoing a process where it potentially becomes independent (nothing to do with Trump) and seems Denmark is ok with it more or less, until trump opened his mouth. It seems like it is a likely eventuality, with or without Trump.

The island is easy to “buy off”, with only 50k inhabitants…its like a large town.

US has a big interest to not have that land fall to its enemies, who are in line to scoop it up.

Therefore: is it not better for western interests that if Greenland becomes independent, then it remains in sphere of influence of the West / USA, and not host say, a Chinese naval base for a yearly stipend of 50k usd to each of its 50k inhabitants? That’s 2.5 billion only…pocket change for the Chinese.

The one who is fucking up here is Denmark, letting their territory drift into no mans land and failing to keep it in check because of feels and because we are so soft in Europe.

EDIT: don’t get the downvotes at all. Is there or is there not an independence movement likely to succeed? If yes: then obviously US has a specific interest it doesn’t fall under the wrong influence.

    4. What if Denmark and Greenland puts the price at 1 trillion just to mock Trump?

    5. Cold war presidents from their grave watching trump destroy europes faith in NATO before even taking office:

      😐

    6. From Denmark: In Denmark we are pretty pissed having a supposedly friend threaten us with economic or even military pressure for us to give up part of our kingdom. With friends like that who needs enemies??

    7. Puzzled_Bag4112 on

All this imperial talk about what’s best for who. Greenland is a democracy- in 2025 it’ll most likely have a referendum if its people wish to be independent. Then eventually if its people wish to be in the EU. I’ve heard nothing about its people wishing to be apart of America- which seems impossible based on how their laws conflict in so many areas.

Trump will not attack Greenland to annex it. He can say all he wants but the American people would never support that and it would lead to Vietnam level protests. Look how quickly it took Americans to turn on bush with the Afghanistan invasion- especially considering how soon 9/11 was. And that did push America to push back its plan. Yes there’s the MAGA problem that’s concerning and yes it’s a problem that Trump is even at the least just talking about this- but I actually do have more faith in the Americans. Unless he finds a proxy country to invade Greenland instead- then that can get tricky since Americans do love proxy wars. But given Greenland is an island surrounded by modern democracies I don’t know who the proxy war could even involve.

    8. concerned-potato on

Most likely Trump will issue something like an ultimatum – “sell it for $X or I will take it for free with force”.

Another option he will try to hijack the independence movement, fund it, they declare independence and then make a deal with the US without Denmark involved.

Those two things – are the biggest risks.

    9. SmallGreenArmadillo on

I can’t be the only one thinking that sooner or later Greenlanders will start wanting to secede?

    10. Material-Spell-1201 on

They will problably try to buy the People there. A basic income of like $50K a year for life for each Greenlanders= $2.85bn total cost per year. Absolutely negligible for a $30 trillion economy.

    11. Aromatic-Deer3886 on

The west and nato would never allow it, he’s fucking with us in Canada too. These next 4 years America is an adversary of the free and democratic world.

    12. Ok-Bowl-6366 on

I think we are all agreed that the military might of Denmark renders any aggression by the United States unthinkable.

    13. Issue with this is that Greenland is an independent democracy with only 56000 people if I remember correctly. 56000 x 10.000.000 dollar is 560 billion, which is a bargain. And every citizen of greenland would be set for life. He only needs 2/3 to say yes to have a constitutional change in Greenland and all of a sudden there are 52 states in the US of A……

So yes, he could just buy it by buying “yes” votes.

    14. thehippieswereright on

but what if it is not about greenland, but about creating an atmosphere in which russia annexing ukraine appears rational

    15. NutsyFlamingo on

Dumb question… does the EU countries (through Greenland) & Canada have budgets / plans in place to counter the 50 bases Russia has built surrounding half the Arctic Ocean?

    16. bjornbamse on

Don’t give the idiot platform. And prepare for a total deglobalization and a situation when we may have to fight USA and Russia. Bring all industry back to Europe under security regulations. Start a joint EU nuclear deterrence force. Build 5000 nuclear warheads and MIRVed ICBMs. That’s the only way to go forward.

    17. BuffyPawz on

At a few million a vote the US could buy off the Greenland population. How loyal are Greenlanders to Denmark? We might find out. The Danish can keep saying it’s not for sale, but in Trump’s world everything is for sale. He has no honor or conscious.

    18. BeaverMissed1 on

All this annexing /Gulf of america verbal crap is him, looking for a way to go full fascist.

    19. Shallowmoustache on

I think he’s serious as well.

The claims about Canada and the UK (from Musk) are just a diversion to make the claim on Greenland more acceptable. If we are outraged about Canada and the UK, Greenland seems way less bad. Stirring shit abroad is a good way to focus media on something else other than domestic politics (which we all expect to be a shitshow agan).

It has a very small population but a lot of resources.

It’s kinda the perfect target to dismantle NATO because there are no direct borders with other european countries and it seems foreign to most europeans. It’s far and remote enough that a random person in mainland europe would not want to give their life for it.
If europe tries to respond, the american gas to Europe will stop or be reduced drastically.

It’s a way to dissociate the US from Europe (and though it’s Trump’s idea, I’m sure Putine whispered it in his ear) while ensuring more resources.

Will they go for a full-on conflict? Probably not at the beginning. First they can and will stir some “independance” campaigns (which has already started). Then they will probably organize some “local” insurgency with little green men who will not identify as americans but will allow the US to do whatever they want.
If that does not work well enough they’ll officially send troops on a humanitarian mission.

Of course, the option for Denmark to cede greenland will always be on the table, but the price will never be worth it.

    20. cherryfree2 on

It would be super helpful if Greenland stopped proclaiming that they want independence from Denmark every other week.

    21. Bat shit crazy world we are living in. As a late 80s child I miss when life was boring and normal.

I hope all 27 EU countries steps up in support and rhetoric fast.

    22. It’s a lot more serious than that. If the US moves on Greenland, it’s open bar elsewhere. China will go for Taiwan, and others may get a lot more cocky too, Azerbaijan or Turkey. If Ukraine was not resisting heroically against Russia, they would probably go for the Baltics. Scary times ahead, Europe needs real leaders (aka not VDL) and a real vision for defense and integration.

    23. He was always serious. He has zero sense of humor. He only knows hate, bullying, lying, revenge. People who cross him get disappeared.
