      >**The Charleroi public prosecutor’s office is opening an investigation following a suspicious deposit of 100,000 euros into an account belonging to PS leader Karalabos Raptis by the sellers of a plot of land. Hospital group Humani bought that land for €1.6 million, only to find out that it was too steep to build on.**

      >As part of a corruption investigation, Charleroi public prosecutors carried out three searches on Thursday morning and deprived two people of their freedom for questioning. One of the two is PS member Karalabos Raptis, chairman of the daily management bureau and of the board of directors of Humani, a cross-municipal organisation that manages six hospitals and three care homes in the province of Hainaut.

      >The subject of the investigation is the purchase of a plot of land in 2022 in Châtelineau, near the city of Charleroi, newspapers Le Soir and L’Echo write. Humani bought the 4-hectare plot for €1.6 million with the intention of building a psychiatric hospital there. The sellers, a couple, did not make a bad deal: they had bought the same piece of land for a mere 26,000 euros.

      >Building plans soon fell through. The site proved unsuitable to build a hospital on, due to too great of an incline. This raised questions from the MR, which openly questioned whether this was a case of ‘blind buying’, as no feasibility study had been done.

      >**Possible bribery**

      >The Charleroi public prosecutor’s office has now opened an investigation after finding out that the selling couple deposited a sum of some €100,000 in Raptis’ account. It thus involves possible bribery.

      >At the time of the purchase, Raptis was not yet chairman of the board of directors: that was PS member Daniel Vanderlick, former mayor of Châtelet. At the time, Raptis was still active for the Les Engagés party. As a member of the executive board, he did take part in meetings on the purchase of the land. At the recent municipal elections, he switched to the PS. He thus got elected as a municipal councillor in Châtelet on 13 October. He then became chairman of the board of Humani.
