If the carbon emissions are just directed elsewhere it’s a silly thing to have a cap as the net effect on the planet is the same. Ultimately we should be looking at bringing Dublin airport up to scratch and compete with London.
Of course it will. It’s pure fantasy from regional politicians to think the alternative is more flights to Shannon or whatever.
As is the case every time when the passenger cap people falsely assume this is some climate action initiative.
Take notice that it is a passenger cap and not a flights cap. If it were a climate action then the aim would be to reduce the number of planes or emissions regardless of the number of passengers on the flights. The passenger cap is imposed by Fingal County Council as the area around the airport does not have the infrastructure or capacity to move that many people away from the airport.
If we want to improve Dublin airport to rival airports like Heathrow we need to invest in infrastructure like Heathrow has to take passengers away from the airport without crowding the local roads with tons of cars. So if you support raising the passenger cap you need to be supporting the Metro.
The impact of Britain being outside the EU is more than enough to compensate for scare stories coming from the likes of the ITIC.
How many people do we know who want to travel to Ireland but have been unable to do so because of the existing cap since it’s been in place? 0 I would imagine.
i’m sure a lot of the flights can be diverted to Shannon/Knock instead of Dublin. Its all about marketing these airport destinations better.

DAA agreed to it years ago and had no problems with it, their only whinging now cuz they did nothing to address the concerns and causes of the cap but want it removed regardless.
As a interview last month with a ex-DAA manager stated, if they had addressed the concerns there’d be no problem but they want their cake and damn everyone else.

As the passenger cap was introduced to manage traffic on roads surrounding the airport I fail to see why the airport is forced to include connecting passengers in the cap?
Dublin has become a larger hub, in particular for Americans coming across the Atlantic and then connecting onto European services. Obviously these people have zero impact on local roads.
Shame Dublin is the only airport in Ireland
