I’m actually disgusted – and I vote FG. I was against it in the budget and I’m against it now. They won’t pass it on. They’ll pocket the difference.
Sharp_Balance_8678 on
Should have raised it if anything.
I’ll bet you anything that hotel prices will not come down as a result of this. Nearly €300 for a room in most hotels on a Saturday in Galway where I’m from.
Absolute gougers.

Beat me by a minute. Fuck the vintners and the publicans, they wont lower a penny, claiming they need it to survive as always. Scumbags.
Disgusted, those people should not be given any special treatment!

This is just one of the many ways FF and FG intend to move our money into the pockets of their friends.
Prices won’t come down. The saving won’t be passed along to customers. Hotel and restaurant owners will just make money.
Silver lining I suppose is at least like 5% of them aren’t shit people.

Course they do give the price gougers more profit

This should be the least of our worries. wait till all the other shit they are promising behind doors to the indos starts to manifest itself. Done the same with the greens. Bit by bit tortured with it for the years [afterwards.One](http://afterwards.One) thing for sure, you wont get a rise anyday now and everything is going to get dearer. And the rich will thrive. Self serving baskets the lot of them.

The more and more I learn about restaurants in particular and the profit margins, the more incline I am to agree with reducing the VAT. It’s a tough business. I’ve actually done a 180 on my opinion of this. Originally I was a bit pissed the costs are passed on to customers, but it actually is incredibly tough to balance the costs. Welcome move on my part.
Rennie_Burn on
I doubt it will make a difference as prices will not fall. People have simply had enough of over priced accomodation, and mediocre food…

Now that wasn’t so hard was it.

Apologies for my poor knowledge- but it was explained to me before that each EU member state has a limited number of services/industries that they can apply reduced VAT rates to – and – if they were to apply a new one, they would need to take the reduced rate from another?
Am I way off the mark here?
I didn’t read the article (don’t judge me)

This is just fucking stupid. We all know businesses are not gonna reduce their prices, no sane businessesman or woman reverses a price increase. They want money, and this VAT reduction gives them more money. They’ve now set a precedent that if they jack up prices then bitch and moan enough the government will find a way to give them a handout.
Do you know what other type of move this is? It’s myopic. Sure some businesses will get a boost of money from this, but if the medium-long term impact of the price increases is that they’re still losing money from people no longer showing up then it’s just delaying the business’ eventual shutdown. And it’ll be the business owner’s own fault for being too fucking greedy. But many don’t care about the medium to long term; they get their money, sell or close then move on to some other venture with which they can scam people. And the government is content to just help them along.
Anyone who celebrates this is fucked in the head and will be surprisingly “shocked” when this doesn’t stop their favourite coffee spot from eventually closing down. You wanna charge nearly €5 for coffees? You deserve to close.
God the leaders of this country and those who advocated for this are beyond idiotic. They’re celebrating the fact that the can has been kicked down the road. Gobshites.

Okay I need to ask this, everyone here outraged at businesses receiving support to continue in business, what kind of business support do you think is appropriate?
There are plenty of towns in Ireland like Clonmel that are full of abandoned boarded up retail sites. Is this the kind of thing we’d like to see just in general?

I agree just saw 4 places in my hometown close all fairly busy and one case a famous trad music place with packed house 5 nights a week. The money stays in our economy OK donald trump might get a slightly higher margin in donebeg but I would prefer that to 4 pubs and 2 restaurants not being viable in ennis

It’s completely unfair on retailers stuck with the 23% rate. Two identical premises with similar costs – rent, rates, insurance, energy, wages etc. One decides to sell sandwiches and one sells shoes. Why does the sandwich shop get a favourable VAT rate?

The hidden headline no doubt like the last vat rate but is that actually were also increasing employers prsi. Give with one hand and take away with two.

The government of nods and winks. This means nothing except to giant hoteliers who have already fleeced the Irish taxpayer over the last five years. Not one worker will be seeing a difference in their lives because of this.

Conflicted on this one, hospitality sector does need to be supported due to the rise in their expenses and overheads over the last few years.
However, I am uneasy at FF/FG politicians treating our surplus corporate tax receipts as a guaranteed recurring source of income.
Pre-budget it was speculated in the media that a reduced 9% VAT rate restricted to just the food and catering sector would have an estimated full year cost of €545 million.
Icy-Lab-2016 on
The industry will continue to under pay staff and not pass a single cent saving to the customer. A seriously bad idea for a feckless industry.
Altruistic_Papaya430 on
On a bill of €100 it’ll reduce the VAT by around ~€3.25
I simply can’t understand how that’ll be the panacea they’re making it out to be

The customers might get 10c off a pint over the course of a few years, but the staff get more hours which keeps people working. I’d rather that than hundreds end up on social welfare.

I’m happy that we’ll lose less hospitality businesses to closure because this and they’ll be better able to pay their staff. A good thing

Hopefully it at least encourages new places to open to replace some of the good ones we’ve lost.

It won’t help one bit except for give extra money to the scalpers who think tourists and locals will pay the same prices which the same results. The same failing businesses will be complaining about something else once the reduced VAT rate comes in. The majority of businesses that you hear complaining about the VAT rate are the same businesses taking advantage of immigrants, paying them nothing and crying to whoever will listen to them while serving shit food and drink. Let them die…
