      Simple: make that a promise on the condition of going back to original borders then walk back on the memorandum in 10 years when putin is gone or dead.

      Ukraine: never joins NATO, gets nukes, is able to join EU.
      Russia: walks away from any Ukraine territory pre 2014, reperations to Ukraine for starting the war.

      This is the only way this demand would work.

      This is between Ukraine and Putin (the rest of Russia doesn’t have a voice, so they don’t count)

      Sure, a US president can mediate if Ukraine and Putin accept that, but that is the limit of their role in the negotiations

      Putin has chosen not to be trusted in any negotiations nor does he seem to even want them by throwing out demands he knows Ukraine would never agree to

      Putin just wants death and destruction, may Ukraine swiftly and expertly deliver that to him.

      That’s literally saying “because we’re going to invade it again one day”. If you have no plans to invade a country, you shouldn’t care about their membership in NATO.

      Putin and the rest of the Russians have ~~forfeited~~ unilaterally incinerated the *privilege* of being heard by the Ukrainians and the rest of the civilized world.

      At this stage, the Ukrainians have the unassailable right to *demand* that Russians are to be demilitarized and to pay substantive reparations to rebuild Ukraine.

      It’s a massive disaster that the Russians as the ruling ethnic ~~group~~ **caste** of the USSR got off the hook in 1991 by *never* being held to account for the horrors (e.g. Holodomor) that they inflicted on any **non**-Russian during the existence of that pseudo-Marxist monstrosity.

      Applying the experiences with the external treatment of the Germans after each of WW I and WW II or the Japanese after WW II onto the Russians after 1991 has proven to be a grievous error.

      They happily cashed in on the material benefits of *Wandel durch Handel* and lower barriers to movement so that they could travel regularly to Europe for summer vacations, study in Western universities, work in Western multinationals, and even buy choice real estate in the West.

      The Russians in their primitive world-view have felt deep-down vindicated for their depravity committed up to 1991 because they did not experience the deserved reckoning to force them to renounce their national identity as “conquerors” built on medieval-grade depravity and vicious chauvinism.

      Instead, they simplistically and routinely equate external calls for collective responsibility to accusations of collective guilt. It’s all RuSsOpHoBiA to them. Their primitive thinking holds that since millions of them have clearly not been the first-order *perpetrators* of Soviet-era crimes, then they at large have *zero* need to take any collective responsibility as a society to work effectively against any of their own kind who tries to replicate such depravity.

      This infantile societal cowardice comes out in how Russians silently consent to suppressing “Never Again!” of the last century with “**We Can Do It Again!**” ([Можем повтовить!](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pobedobesie#Propaganda_and_Putin)) of this century.

      Trying to replicate the game of playing nice with the Germans and Japanese after 1945 with the Russians after 1991 has bitten us in the West hard, to say nothing of the Ukrainians.

      In the words of a former associate of Nаvаlnу’ѕ, Dmіtrу Тіtkоv, from February 2022:

      *I will not go fight in this war on the Ukrainian side simply because I will not be of much use there.* ***So if you want to help someone – help the Ukrainians, they deserve it. And the Russians have to go on their own until the end of the road they created themselves. And if they experience an epiphany, they will understand why they are not loved.***
