Another long delay in protecting people who have to use public transport
Transport police needs to be explored. Even just the presence of them there with people knowing they have power will reduce the crime on public transport.

I’d recommend reviewing Airports and Aviation Acts 1936 to 2014 for reference to how this was done for Airport Police.

It’s just gonna be that Garda truck. They’ll look in the windows of the buses and give a stern look to anyone acting the maggot.
So they floated this as a solution without having done any homework?
She is possibly one of the most incompetent ministers this country has ever seen.
What use are transport police if they can’t arrest? Surely it’s a given and they won’t just be there to be observers.
Not surprising from a minister whose response to runaway youth crime was to try pass legislation to treat u24s as young offenders. A true genius

If we had a dedicated Transport Police, the night of looting and rioting in Nov ’23 would not have happened at the same scale. Scumbags in large groups got on darts, luas and buses heading in to cause mayhem. It would have taken one cop on board to commandeer the vehicle and send it back to its point of origin. Said scumbags would have been kept out of town. 50 transport police at strategic hubs would have been clinical.
14 months later and McEntee is still himming and hawwing. Joke.

If they aren’t going to have powers of arrest then why divert Garda Resources? Why not just have a security team like the Luas do?
If they need the Gards, them calling them will still be an option. In reality though, all they’ll really need to do is throw people off the bus / dart / luas, and maybe radio back to the next few buses along that route to watch out for that particular pack of scrotes.
Unfortunately, the scrote issue seems to be getting worse, ultimately finding a way of tackling that is a far larger issue that we need to look into, it isn’t limited to public transport by any stretch of the imagination, and while we need more Gardaí on the street, there’s zero sense diverting them like this.
