      > All websites on which pornographic material can be found, including **social media platforms**, must introduce “robust” age-checking techniques such as demanding photo ID or running credit card checks for UK users by July.

      This includes Reddit.

      > **Analysis** A little more than two months out from its first legal deadline, the UK’s Online Safety Act is causing concern among smaller online forums caught within its reach. The legislation, which came into law in the autumn of 2023, applies to search services and services that allow users to post content online or to interact with each other.
      >
      > The government says it is designed to protect children and adults online and creates new legal duties for the online platforms and apps affected.
      >
      > When one thinks of online harms – death threats, revenge porn, suicide encouragement etc. – one thinks of the largest global platforms and services. But over the decades small hobbyist forums have sprung up on even the most niche topics, while retailers often allow customers to chat to each other to share ideas, challenges, and solutions.
      >
      > Estimates suggest **100,000 such services will have to comply with the act**, and some feel they don’t have resources to do the compliance work, or that their content is not relevant to the kind of harm the law is designed to prevent.
      >
      > Nonetheless, according to law, regulator Ofcom could impose a fine of £18 million ($22 million) or 10 percent of their global revenue – whichever is greater – for failing to comply.

In ‘unrelated’ news: VPN downloads in the UK have skyrocketed.

Proof that politicians have no idea about how the internet works.

This will inevitably lead to a situation where you basically have to identify yourself before connecting to internet at all. Porn is just an excuse. Next there will be other things. Until one day we will be asked to identify ourselves before shopping online in ikea. Because you know, they sell knives among other things. And those are dangerous.
      Edit: spelling

Pornhubs parent company has come out and said they don’t support this and “it’ll push people to the dark web”.

They had no problem when ID checks were last suggested and they were going to run the service you’d have to pay to get your ID checked.

I’m shocked and appalled that they’d change their stance on a law when they’re no longer going to be making money from it. /S

Can use the Fashion mail order catalog like we used to, if it still exists 😂

Combine the Tories decade and a half of chaos with Labour’s massive hard on for authoritarianism and you end up here.

You should all be ashamed of yourselves.

Sending copies of your ID overseas to corpos notorious for selling data and for “data breaches” sounds like a great idea /s

I’ll see your giant cartoon “18’s Only” switch and raise you my “Three Kids in a Trench Coat” VPN!

If they want to protect children, try instead controlling the age of the persons on the content.

How is UK politics this bad? Is there an IQ limit there needed to become a politician?

    13. procrastinationprogr on

Stupid and ineffective. This will pretty much only apply to the large company owned sites that have at least some kind of control of their content. Any pirate site will just continuously change their url to avoid bans. Also VPNs exist.

Blocking porn from minors can pretty much only be done with extensive parental controls and even that will fail if a kid truly wants to watch porn.

    14. Kheldras on

This still wont make it obsolete for parents to educate their kids to use the internet/media responsibly.

Well, UK is already a police state, introducing a precedent to track people online and limit their freedom of information, and force them to submit personally identifying information to dubious third parties… is kind of what i expect from them at this point.

Wont stop people from accessing porn, either.

    16. FluffyPuffOfficial on

This won’t stop horny teens from accessing porn, but atleast it will lead to many non tech savvy people leaking their personal data to scam websites.

So what are they going to do if USAPornSite.com just says: we don’t care and we’re not going to do that. DNS block all sites that don’t do it? You can’t sue them, because American companies do not need to comply with UK Laws.

I’d say a better solution is not giving your fucking 10 year old an iPhone. But what do I know?

    18. How about this, why not just making it the other way around? All devices sold in the country must come with Parental Control settings (already the case with all major brands). Parents are legally required to activate them when handing internet capable devices to children. Doing it this way would be magnitudes more effective.

    19. Are you over 18 ?

      Yes.

      Are you absolutely sure?

      Uhm, yes ?

      Alright, go on then.

If anyone thinks that I’m giving my ID to a dodgy porn site they’re bonkers

    21. nicht_ernsthaft on

Well this is stupid and Orwellian, but this part was funny:

      >Ofcom has published what it calls a “non-exhaustive” list of technologies that may be used to verify ages, which includes … Facial age estimation

So when they want to crank it, teenagers in the UK will now have to hold up a picture of Boris Johnson to their phone camera, or wear a Margaret Thatcher mask to get in.

Kids will be sitting there in a halloween mask with their wiener out because some silly prudes and bible bashers think porn is “harmful” and have a huge weird stick up their ass about teenagers jerking off.
