It can interconnect with Metro, connecting it with the airport would overload it. Really, it needs to go further West, not North. The population out Mulhuddart, Dunshaughlin and Dunboyne has skyrocketed, and a Luas terminus out by the Damastown industrial park would be heavily used.
The article talks about two specific proposals: a new Park and Ride north of the M50, and a proposal to link it to Metrolink at Northwood.
I think there’s merit in both ideas but in fairness an extension to meet an as yet uncommenced metro line is not really timely. In relation to the park and ride, again reasonable enough, but there’s already a plan for a [P&R at St Margaret’s Road](https://www.luasfinglas.ie/media/ywufjbz2/lf_routemap.jpg?rmode=max&height=500) on the existing proposed route which has reasonable access to the M50.
Too late for all that now. Running a separate LUAS line along the M50 to the airport could have been done relatively cheaply. Would have been a good medium term solution. And no it wouldn’t have been overloaded
Luas is completely unsuitable for the airport. I’d still be getting a bus via port tunnel (which is actually a pretty good service relative to most airports, despite our lack of rail connection).
The Dart, Luas and Metro should all eventually connect with the airport.
