After independence, Estonia debated on what the flag of the republic ought to be. The blue-black-white flag was adopted by the Estonian Students’ Society (EÜS) as early as 1884 and its colours had become an unnofficial symbol of Estonian nationalism. However, there was also a strong wish for a nordic style flag. These four versions were proposed in 1919 by some anonymous person.
The text reads:
>Flag project of the Estonian republic, war-flag, civil ensign
>The colours of the Estonian struggle for freedom.
>Observe: the state flag is a war flag with the coat of arms of the republic in the middle
