“The one thing they can do quickly is buy our oil and gas,” Trump said to reporters in the White House after his inauguration on Monday. “We will straighten that out with tariffs, or they have to buy our oil and gas.”

The European Union, as well as some Asian governments, are considering purchasing more energy from the world’s biggest producer of crude and exporter of liquefied natural gas. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen floated the idea last year that imports from the US could replace the bloc’s consumption of Russian LNG.

Isn’t this actually a good thing in the grand scheme of things? Buying from the US means not buying from Russia

    3. Im_Camus on

‘Buy from me, because if you don’t Ill make it more expensive 😡😡’

    4. No_Dig473 on

I’d say: introduce those tariffs Donald Trump! It will further increase the cost of living for your own people.

    5. Remarkable_Range_793 on

Fuck Trump, buy from Canada instead!!
Let’s support our true brothers and sisters!
Hell, let’s also support Mexico rather than the USA now.

    6. Replace Russian fuels with US fuels for continued assistance? Sure, why not.

    7. You_Will_Fail1 on

Europe must lower oil and gas consumption even lower.

    8. MrmarioRBLX on

Does Trump even know tariffs are on imports, not exports?

Be nice if Europe could ramp up nuclear energy production so we’d need less fossil fuels instead of closing down plants out of fears stoked by oil company marketing

    10. Its a good thing the Americans are our allies otherwise you would think they are expansionistic bullies just like Russia

    11. eidrisov on

Luckily share of renewables has been steadily increasing in a very fast pace in EU.

Soon (5-10 years) there won’t be any need to buy any oil and gas from anyone.

Of course, Trump won’t be in the office by that time, but, looking at the shtshow that US is going through, you never know, someone even worse can come to power there.

All I want is to see the Americans humbled. Come on world, lets all unite together

I think now is the time to start removing US military bases from our European soil.

    14. optimal_random on

Fuck Trump. Take your army from EU soil and fuck off.

Then we can develop a proper European defense using European tech.

    15. OkKnowledge2064 on

if we give in now he will just continue threatening tariffs at every point he can

    16. allanmoller on

What about we stop buying if he mentions tariffs one more time?

    17. Makes no difference who we buy it off. Sure, “oh noes you’ve really taken advantage of us”.

If we buy ‘more’ and production is the same, prices will rise, especially in the United States. Because a secret, no one sells cheap while they can export it and earn much more. Unless it is clear that the objective is precisely that. Let fuel prices rise in his country.

On the other hand, Europe has been installing alternative energies for a few years, so demand is not going to grow at the same rate in fosil fuels. Cogeneration plants are obsolete (not to mention fuel/oil plants), because they are monolithic and are a waste of money. and investments and Financially speaking, money is flowing to wind farms etc. Nobody is going to turn on the fucking gas plant while it can serve with more margins in wind power.

Furthermore, in Europe the electricity market is much more liberalized than in the United States and there is a lot of competition from small producers and marketers and due to genetics, it is a market that is growing avoiding centralization, and monoliths and monopolies.

It doesn’t matter if he ask ‘Europe’ to buy more fossil fuels, the market has simply evolved, and it is the market that rejects them. So either he’s profoundly stupid, or he’s been in a cave for the last half decade.

And I forgot, I hope and wish that my country, instead of buying more from that redneck idiot, spends the money on renewing and installing more nuclear capacity. And I pray that in that case, and not going for the EPRs, the contract is given to the company that makes the CANDU so that it sucks x2 the anger well.

We need to allow shale gas in Europe and tell everyone around the GTFO.

    20. I swear to god if we ditch our energy supply from an authoritarian regime to get it from another soon to be authoritarian regime and expect different results…

    21. Trump seems to forget that the US imports more IMPORTANT things for the US economy but exports to the EU, nuts and seeds. Europe can live without Almonds and Pistachios.

    22. opinionate_rooster on

      We’re good, thanks.

Actually, could you help us build even more green power plants to even further reduce our dependence on fossil fuels? Cheerio!

    23. araujoms on

I think we have learned our lesson about depending on hostile foreign countries for our energy.

    24. Fit-Courage-8170 on

Nah, time to try get off this crack pipe. EU needs to seriously go for energy independence as fast as possible. Go green or go home

    25. Travel-Barry on

      Simple blackmail.

I’d be semi-okay with this *totally normal* policy if it meant more American investment in our own energy infrastructure to make up for the higher costs imposed on us — but it’s purely to transfer our wealth into the pockets of American energy. It’s not on.

    26. beautyadheat on

Europe needs to find alternative sources. Don’t appease bullies

    27. And the EU’s response should be a diplomatically-worded “Up yours.”

    28. Trumps issue with his trading “deficit” is that the US dollar is too strong. It’s just grown and grown and grown in value in recent years. And if you want to be a country that thrives off of exports, then you actually want a relatively weak currency, because then it’s cheaper for others to buy goods in your country in your currency. But the US dollar is strong against the Euro and the Chinese Yen. That reduces US exports, obviously.

The US won’t let the money printer run amok and force the value of the dollar to go down, because then they risk increasing inflation again, because Americans will also get more money in their hands then.

So Trump is in a pickle. As strong as the US economy is right now, it doesn’t really have a lot of room for change. It’s pretty locked on just keeping inflation in check.
