      I personally think it’s a great idea.

Under a new EU law Ireland must offer a digital identity wallet app by 2026 and Ireland is doing it by the end of this year. €20 million as per the article above has been allocated so far for the development of the app.

Completely voluntary, absolutely nobody is required to have it and it does not replace physical ID’s

The digital wallet will store versions of one’s birth cert, driver’s license, Age Card and other official documents, such as marriage certificates. The digital driving licence will be acceptable to gardaí.

Digital passports and passport cards will be available at a later stage.

5:3 odds on this being roll out being delayed, any takers?

    3. Brilliant, means you’ll have a form of digital ID with you too. Now get rid of the paper insurance and tax discs. Utterly pointless when AGS can just scan the reg and get the info.

Did I also see that physical insurance and tax discs are going away? And what about the NCT? Does anyone know?

Crazy we can have a driver’s license on our phone but can’t pay for a bus with your phone.

“The Department for Public Expenditure says it is also working with national and European stakeholders to make the wallet secure.”

That’s worrying – Surely something of this magnitude would have security as a Required Capability?

I wonder if this is going to go hand in hand with the push for age verification on certain websites.

It would be handy if instead of sites asking for you to upload ID, you could get some authenticator code from the app that you can upload instead. Something that doesn’t translate a single bit of data beyond “This guy has verified he’s over 18 already, let me through”.

So long as I don’t have to hand my unlocked phone to a garda.

Annoying that this isn’t using the Apple and Google wallet feature and is instead using a separate app.
