This is a flight update! You will want to read the whole story because it’s a sad one with a very sweet ending.
Both men in this photograph are Americans who were injured fighting in Ukraine. The one on the right (in the Rum shirt) was severely wounded. In November, Protect a Volunteer got him a flight home to the USA to get his final surgery.
The other man was also severely wounded fighting in Ukraine. After injury he was evacuated to a hospital in another European country. We learned at the last minute that he was getting released from the hospital and didn’t know where to go. We got him a hotel for 3 nights and then a flight home. He got picked up by his friend who said he wouldn’t let him arrive home alone. Later I have a voice note from the first volunteer about what it feels like to come home alone and no one is waving a flag for you (to be posted at another time).
Travel home for injured volunteers is funded through donating to the “Flight Fund” at [protectavolunteer.com](http://protectavolunteer.com) and through donating airline miles and hotel points. Injured volunteers do need hotel accommodation when traveling and if you have points from your own business travel this is a great way to help someone else. There is a sign-up form on the website.
For the flight fund, we have $1,000 of the $1535 needed to help a Brazilian long-term volunteer soldier go home to visit family. We use this fund to book cash tickets when necessary, hotels for the injured, or to cover the taxes and fees on awards tickets. In 2024 we assisted 70 volunteers with travel to or from Ukraine. In 2023 the number was 117.
