But yeah, depressing.
By all measures, government housing policy has been a massive failure for several years now.
Is there perhaps a splurge of units which were unfinished at the end of the year which will then boost 2025? When is a house counted as finished? It is per unit, or by development in a given location?
Martin, Harris and OBrien all campaigned on delivering close to 40,000 homes and now we’ve proof they were lying.
They shouldnt have been let back near government. But at the very least O’Briens position as housing minister is untenable.
This is broadly in line with the plan.
2023 was 3,000 properties ahead of forecast, 2024 was 3,000 behind.
So on balance we’re not behind, but not a spectacular outcome.
2022 and 2023 saw a large backlog of properties completed following COVID, which is why a comparison with 2023 is a little bit iffy. Building projects take a long time, so yes we can “still blame COVID” for impacts 4 years later.
But we’re past that now. Inflation has returned to normal, supply chains are stabilised, and we had a massive number of commencement notices in 2024, which should result in completions in 2025.
I mean most people should be happy with this news. We all got a chance to vote 2 months again and judging by the fact that the majority voted back in the same government who’s policies have led to headlines like this and exasperated the housing crisis most of Ireland support news like this.
Yet people are taken aback when they see us young people are forced to leave the country. The older generation are forcing their own kids and grandkids out of here.
not sure who i find more irritating. the people who directly voted for FF-FG yet again or the people who voted for the obviously-not-independent independents🙄
The only people that didn’t acknowledge that this was going to be the case was the government. Instead they’ve gaslighted the public with ‘commencement’ figures. Shambolic.
