Out of curiosity, what is supposed to happen to these in very strong wind? Some sort of over speed protection?

That’s the problem with those massive turbines – the faster the wind, the faster the tips of the blades are going, and the more stress on the structure and more danger of it breaking to bits. So they have to be shut down precisely when the most wind energy is available. It would be better to have a lot of smaller, distributed turbines that a few big ones. I don’t know how well bladeless turbines stand up to severe wind but that’s something that should be looked into.
