    1. I don’t get it, why do you even need them? I use none of these and never felt like I miss anything.

The entitlement of people here is ridiculous. We have nothing to compete with, yet every one here feels like they are the best. Wake up. We have dinosaurs in the EU parliament, in our governments and apparently amongst our citizens.

      I agree 101%
And for now people can simply quit these – especially x

Europe is well behind of America in terms of tech, so it’s impossible to dethrone American monopoly

There’s Mastodon But we are not quite there yet.

It makes me be a bit hopeful that there’s a lot more talk about not having the european options in the last month or so. There’s a demand, we just need a supply now.

e: I mentioned Mastodon because it’s european, I don’t think it’s what the average internet user wants

Europe is not a country. Different countries, different laws, different languages.

It would be nice to have our own Sillicon Valley, however, all the big tech corporations are either in the United States or Asia (particularly China, Japan and Taiwan) for a reason while the Europe Union has been stuck in one place for a very long time now when it comes to its own technological industry. I don’t see a European Amazon, Apple, Meta or TSMC happening anytime soon.

Mastodon (German) replaces Twitter. Bluesky (while American) is also on a feediverse protocol and currently non-profit. They are working on making it “as billionaire proof as possible”.

Flashes App (German), also open protocol and I think also currently open source, is aspiring to become a replacement for Instagram and TikTok.

Pixelfed is a decentralized open source Instagram competitor. Meta takes it seriously enough to block links to Pixelfed on FB. this website lists more EU alternatives to US services: [https://european-alternatives.eu/alternatives-to](https://european-alternatives.eu/alternatives-to) spread the word, start using the EU alternatives.

Because investors invest in places with less bureaucracy and red tape for businesses, ie US not EU

I honestly don’t care that much about social, even though I use them of course.
But I sincerely hope that we (us European) can take this idea of “independence from the USA” and accelerate those processes which will allow us to better impose ourselves in foreign politics.
We need to stand together, and this is the right time to feel and get closer as a European community

    11. Fanastik on

Maybe time to say they are a agents of a hostile foreign interest and just block them.

Wouldnt be 20 years to soon!

      Anything else is treason!

    12. Useless_or_inept on

If you want a European alternative to FAANG, then campaign for Europe to have a more positive environment for growing tech businesses. And keep on campaigning for about twenty years, until Europe catches up.

Why don’t we build an European version of VK? Software developers who would like to hop on this project DM me

    14. MagnificentCat on

The biggest is probably VK.com, but unfortunately it’s Russian

    15. Anony_mouse202 on

      Taxed and regulated into obscurity.

That’s basically the answer to all the “where is the European version of [Tech]” questions.

    16. de_boeuf_etoile on

I think the EU should set up an open source public service social media platform where you verify your e-identity and then choose username to show those you don’t wish to share your real name with. Anybody should be able to build their own version of the client, meaning the design and UI. Data requests for third party plugins could be approved by the user every single time like with apple products, and preferably hashed. The approval could be rescinded at any point and the third party would have none of your data stored.

      This would be great.

    17. Eminence_grizzly on

Do you need European trillion-dollar companies or just European services to replace them? I’m pretty sure you can use your local stores to replace Amazon, for example.

    18. DocHolidayPhD on

I think the point is that social media is bad for you and probably shouldn’t exist to begin with…

    19. SeasonCorrect670 on

Yeah it sucks. China has Baidu, WeChat and Alibaba. Russia has Yandex and VK. Europe just consumes everything that America makes. We only really have Spotify, but even that is partially owned by Tencent.

    20. secret179 on

Europeans banned it companies with gdpr and other regulations.

We’re a European based (UK/CZ) alternative to Duolingo if that counts!,

Not a public company, not profits above all else and not shoving AI into everything

Still working on things but if you’re interested in what we’re trying to make visit us at https://lingonaut.app
