Young people have no prospects of home ownership and are expected to raise families in someone else’s home.
And each time this topic is brought up some smartass argues that there is no correlation because “germany rich and low birthrate in germany too, stoopid!” However young people also have a hard time owning homes there..
Home ownership is where it all starts, if it doesnt get fixed have fun managing birthrates.

Don’t know much about other nations but imho for Germany the problem is economic insecurity, unaffordable housing, career penalties if a parent take time off for kids and a totally insufficient support system for the few kids we still get.
Germany as a nation never prioritises kids. So don’t be surprised when the people won’t have any.
For context we would need about 1.5 million immigrants each year to compensate our aging population. The people are going crazy when it’s more than 100k. Looking forward to the economic crisis because of too few workers combined with starving elders because of too little money to support them.

Women need to be compensated for raising children. We can’t do it all, work full time and be the default parent, especially not more than one.

A bit funny to post this over and over again each month. Not sure to what purpose other than to feed xenophobic anxiety.
The birth rate is dropping globally the more advanced a society is.

This is terrifying to look at and it always baffles me that almost no one tries to do anything about it.

Isn’t immigration easy partial fix for this atleast in the short term?

The main barrier to having children is access to the workplace. 50% of marriages end in divorce and if you have kids and a career gap you are absolutely fucked financially. Having kids is only safe if you are able to support yourself without any input from an unrelaible 2nd party. Without 100% free childcare that is flexible around worktimes and reliable, having kids is a pathway to poverty for women.
Fuck that bullshit. I’m glad that younger women are making better choices for themselves.

Me & my fiance are both engineers in our early 30s having established careers and recent homeowners – now we can start thinking about having kids and will probably settle on one. Life is hectic as is and keeps on getting crazier, when & how are people supposed to have all these kids?

What’s “replacement rate”?
Bruteboris on
Why is the marked red? It implies it far below average. Compared to the Baby Boomers’ generation everything is below average. The average fertility rate before WW2 was around 2.5.

Is there data for 1st & 2nd generation immigrants vs. “natives”? I bet the rate for former is way higher than the latter.

Let’s break it down to an individual level. Im at 3.0 right now. Gonna replace someone who’s at <= 1.0.

When you make living unaffordable, people don’t have kids. Who would have known? Shocking, right?

After people reach a certain income/wealth levels they barely have more than 1 kid tbh.
This is why immigration is high. Europe needs workers for a sustainable economy and to service the needs of an aging population.

I dont understand this replacement rate to be important. You have a generational overlap right? If you have 2 children around 35 You will still be alive when your children get children on their own. So you and your wife will end up with 2 children and 4 grandchildren = 8
