STOCKHOLM, Jan 30 (Reuters) – Sweden’s defence minister said on Thursday the Nordic country had agreed to donate its biggest aid package to Ukraine so far, worth 13.5 billion Swedish crowns ($1.23 billion).
The aid package is Sweden’s 18th since Russia launched a large-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
The government is now negotiating with suppliers in Sweden and Europe to supply prioritised equipment such as artillery and drones, Defence Minister Pal Jonson told a press conference.

Yes yes in Sweden we call it stöd, support. Not aid. An important distinction.

One thing that these kind of numbers hide is that Sweden is a big arms manufacturer, so in reality this is the government paying Swedish companies to build things to then give away to Ukraine.
So it is not as much of a burden on the economy as the numbers might make it look like, but at the end of the day there are the private individuals who own those companies who are getting richer due to this.
For example when you hear “Greece buys new submarine for X million”, that is not the same as “Sweden gives away SaaB fighter jets to Ukraine”.
