I don’t see it happening. Maybe some closer trade program or similar.
Be fucking funny if it did though.
Get México in for a laugh as well!

#Could Canada Ever Join the EU?

As tensions between Canada and the United States grew, some people raised the idea of Canada joining the European Union. Once seen as far-fetched, the suggestion is gaining attention in political circles, with supporters arguing that Canada and Europe share similar values, institutions, and economic interests. However, while the idea is legally possible, experts believe it is unlikely to happen.

The EU’s membership rules state that only European countries can join, though what defines “European” is open to interpretation. Morocco was denied entry for not meeting this requirement in the past, but Canada’s deep historical and political ties to Europe set it apart. Some suggest the EU could benefit from Canada’s natural resources, while Canada might gain economic security by reducing its reliance on the US.

Despite these potential advantages, joining the EU is long and complex. With many European countries still waiting for membership, opening the door to a non-European nation would be controversial. European public opinion also leans against further expansion, especially beyond the continent.

Instead of full membership, experts suggest Canada and the EU could deepen their relationship in other ways. The two already cooperate on trade, research, and resource-sharing, and this could expand further. Some even envision a new alliance of like-minded democracies outside the traditional EU framework.

Even if Canada wanted to distance itself from the US, it would not be easy. The American economy is too deeply connected to Canada’s, and defence partnerships remain crucial. Strengthening ties with Europe could also provoke an adverse reaction from Washington, especially under leaders wary of European influence.

While Canada and the EU may continue to grow closer, full membership seems unrealistic. Canada’s best path forward may be a strengthened partnership rather than a complete shift away from its North American neighbours.

Joining the EU takes ages. Trump will (hopefully) be gone in 4 years.

That said, I’m all for it.

The EU is currently limited to “any European State which respects the values referred to in Article 2 and is committed to promoting them” , and has historically limited this to countries located within the traditional confines of the continent of Europe.

Changing that would be a treaty change, which (along with enlargement in general) requires unanimity.

      See Morocco.

But I suppose they could become a member of the single market. But this would take a lot of time; legislation and standards would have to be harmonized.
In the short run, we have to be very pragmatic. Cooperate with Canada, Mexico, and the UK on a day-to-day basis to improve trade between these nations and to isolate, or rather deal with the self-isolation of, the US.

join maybe, become a close partner like Canada/us was, all in.

It would more realistic to expand co-operation through trade deals like CETA.

I wish you could. But then as a Brit I wish we were still in. We have incredibly stupid people too, egged on even more now by Musk and Trump.,

This will be a brexit for Canada.

Today Canada have product standards for a lost of stuf that is aligned with US.

I will be a major change to change all standards, Electrical, building materials, machinery, food standards etc. this will be impossible.

It will cost a lot of money, and will make everything incompatible with stuff on the other side of the border.

    11. TungstenPaladin on

Yeah, no. Canada doesn’t belong in the Union. Their economy is about to enter into recession. They’ll only be a liability.

    12. While I have zero expectation that we would actually join the EU (although I would love to), we *are* “honorary” Europeans and I think we would love more integration into the European economy, including defense.

    13. Affectionate_Cat293 on

The problem is that Canada is not in the geographical Europe. Europe already rejected Morocco’s application to join the EU in 1987 on the ground that it’s not in Europe.

    14. I keep seeing this idea over and over. Is this actually something in discussion or is it a reddit thing? As a EU citizen I think it’s weird but why the hell not. Weird times also need weird solutions.

Im all in for alliance but saying they would join EU is really stupid

    16. DesignatedDonut2606 on

No, because Orbàn would veto it 🤷🏽‍♀️

Welcome. We need a federal europe and replace the eu with a more worldwide economic union.

    18. LeroyoJenkins on

Just do a reverse merger: Greenland joins the EU and then annexes Canada, resulting in Canaland.

    19. BeginningCow4247 on

It could certainly strike a close association deal like Norway….stay independent but share in the EU market with free trade, and benefit from freedom of movement to work, study, invest

    20. MartinYTCZ on

EU? Highly improbable, but EEA + Schengen would be nice 🙂

    21. YellowAsterisk on

Even joining the EEA would be a very long and difficult process, but free trade is the general direction that both economies should definitely follow – especially by strengthening cooperation in the fields of energy and defence.

    22. MichaelW85 on

Canada isn’t part of Europe or a European overseas territory. Come on, who’s next? Australia or New Zealand? This isn’t the Eurovision 😁 Give them a favourable deal similar to Switzerland. Please, no FoM. Imagine all the American immigrants sneaking into Canada to claim asylum.

    23. Alert-Meaning6611 on

With all due respect to our europeans friends and comrades – it would be a great diservice to our ongoing proccess of reconcilliation with indigenous peoples across canada to join the EU. We are not a european country, and thats okay.
We have many shared values, historic and current ties in trade, defence and much more. Now is a time to further our cooperation yes, as sovereign and seperate nations, and as friends.

Please let us into Eurovision though 🙂
