I hope they keep protesting
The fact that this sentence was concurrent rather than consecutive is totally fucking baffling.
It would seem to have everything required for a consecutive sentence: a totally separate crime during a totally separate incident carried out while on bail for a different offence.
Nevermind that the max sentence for most dangerous driving offences need to be considerably raised anyway.
DPP will hopefully appeal the leniency, though that drags the family through another trial all over again. Yer man Daly is a rubbish judge. Was crap in the District Court, where they still somehow made him president of it for a few years. Cold and out of touch with reality, like a lot of judges.
I’m still yet to see anybody who explains why the sentence wasn’t consecutive, and what limits a judge from giving a consecutive sentence. Just people going on and on about the sentence being concurrent with no information as to why.
We can kick up a stink every now and then for stuff like the lad that assaulted Natasha O’Brien and Joe Drennan’s killer but the real issue is that the prisons are so overcrowded that we don’t have the option of increasing sentences so we’ll be back online giving out every couple of months.
The state paid €29m for the site of the proposed Thornton Hall super prison in 2004 and it is still just sitting there idle. The Irish Prison Service have spent hundreds of thousands upkeeping the empty site too.
That’s what people should be protesting. Until we have some space in Irish prisons, for prisoners, we might as well be screaming into the void.
My heart goes out to Joe’s family every time I see them, I can understand how they feel that they (& Joe) didn’t get justice. I don’t know the ins and outs of the consecutive sentencing guidelines in Ireland, but if it’s the norm that crimes committed out on bail are sentenced concurrently to their initial sentence… I really do feel like this should change.
* 46 convictions
* Out on bail
* Disqualified from driving
* Fleeing from the Gardai
* 122 km/h in a 50 zone
* Killed someone
* Fled the scene
* Tried to wipe his DNA off the car
* Texted his mates to say “I’ve just killed someone but I think I’ll get away with it”
* After getting caught, writes a letter (well, has his taxpayer funded lawyer write one) saying “I didn’t know I hit anyone, I would have stopped if I realised and I’m very sorry”
* Gets a sentencing discount for being apologetic
* Zero sentence
Couldn’t make it up if you tried
