The city is confined by geography that holds air in place very well – if there is no wind moving the air and if air temperature is low, particles and emissions are held in place in the city. It’s a common issue with Stuttgart, especially during the cold winter months with stagnant air masses.

There is a high pressure area over Germany and Poland. Not much air is moving, there is little thermal activity in the cold and the air pressure keeps the fine dust particles on the ground
