Reminder stark che Google può essere piegato a volontà di aiutare l’interesse americano. Questa etichettatura non ha affari in lingue al di fuori dell’inglese americano. Trump è presidente degli Stati Uniti, non presidente del mondo

Mapy.cz is a good alternative I’ve been trying this week

EU / Canada need their own Google. Our information is not safe.

    3. RoadandHardtail on

Trump will one day come to Europe and ask EU to recognise Gulf of America or he’ll put 25% tariff on our export.

It’s normal for Google to use localisation for these things.  Are you using the English version? I can’t tell from the screenshot.

    5. theErasmusStudent on

They do the same for all the places that have two possible names

Made me switch to Organic Maps much faster. I was planning to anyway, but this really nailed it in for me…

    7. Scalage89 on

Mass flag it as wrong information. Google uses hardly any employees, so it might automatically correct this way.

Not saying that you’re wrong in general, just that this particular example doesn’t support the statement. This is the established solution whenever there’s a dispute about how a specific geographic landmark should be named. There are plenty of examples where Google puts a second name in parenthesis. Just look at the Persian Gulf, for example. Same thing, and that one’s a significantly older dispute.

I vote that the rest of the world rename it to the Gulf of Trump’s a Cunt

    10. Should we expect Atlantic and Pacific oceans to be renamed by Trump into American ocean. Since America touches them, you know

    11. Hour-Personality-924 on

Apple’s Maps have it as Mexican Gulf (croatian here).

There is anyway to remove this small dick energy from my google maps ?

    13. PBAndMethSandwich on

This is a dumb post. All names are inherently political, even disputes that are objectively silly.

Other examples include: Londonderry/Derry, Persian Gulf/Arabian Gulf, Sea of Japan/East Sea

      And plenty more i’m sure

Reddit’s indignation of Google’s update is baffling to me. Why are you expecting a company to be some kind of beacon of morality/reason in this scenario?

      >Trump is president of USA, not president of the World

And Google is an American multinational corporation, not the geopolitical authority of the World.

I understand OPs point but i think OP is giving alot of power and say to google and online browsers in general.

Google and online browsers arent the sole arbitrator of truth and cartography.

Any online tech company can call whatever place on a map whatever they want it doesnt make it true, same goes for you and I, no one has a monolpoly on maps and place names.

Maps and place names existed before the web.

Kinda reminds me of the East sea/Sea of Japan situation the Koreans and the Japanese had. It was known as the East sea until Japan decided it wasn’t, the name stuck. I’m not sure if anyone outside of Korea calls it East sea anymore.

I reported it and flagged it for inconsistent map nomenclature.

I propose we rename USofA to North-North Korea. OR Western Russia.
      Make it happen Google.

bottom right corner -> “send product feedback” -> “gulf of mexico is named incorrectly”

Any actually functional alternative to Google maps for Android phones?

    21. MattR0se on

Funny how it is “Gulf of America” and not “Gulf of the USA”. so if this had been a joint decision of all American countries, this would have been a change for the better. The original name also came from imperialism, it’s just like we were okay with it after all this time.

    22. Inquisitor_ForHire on

Google is an American company. What did you expect them to do?

    23. Map makers do not decide on the names of places, they simply go with the least offensive version of a name considering the people looking at the map. So Gulf of America in the US, Gulf of Mexico in Mexico and this hodgepodge in Europe. Same reason The Falklands are called Las Malvinas if you’re accessing from Argentina. Same reason disputed international borders will show differently on different maps depending on who the map is being sold to.

    24. ProfTF2Player on

Google has waited for the change to be formally updated by the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS): [https://www.pcmag.com/news/its-happening-google-maps-will-rename-gulf-of-mexico-to-gulf-of-america](https://www.pcmag.com/news/its-happening-google-maps-will-rename-gulf-of-mexico-to-gulf-of-america)
Additionally, this is just their policy when there are regional differences/disputes: [https://www.cnbc.com/2025/01/28/google-reclassifies-us-as-sensitive-country-like-china-russia-.html](https://www.cnbc.com/2025/01/28/google-reclassifies-us-as-sensitive-country-like-china-russia-.html)

Yes, the renaming is stupid. But don’t get mad over something that has been standard for a long while.

    25. i_am_who_knocks on

These are just warning shots. A war economy will create wars to thrive.

    26. Chompsy1337 on

Did you know Google search results have an “edit suggestion” button.  You can recommend changes to businesses, claim places are closed, change business hours and contact information!

If Google wants to rename things and cause chaos and misinformation and confusion, then by all means that’s what they want!

    27. Take this as a lesson to MINIMISE USE OF US TECH. It’s obviously hard to completely remove yourself, but degoogling yourself is easier than you think and instagram is just wasting your precious time on this earth. Not even gonna mention the dumpster fire that is facebook.

    28. PM_ME_UR_TlTTIES on

Is this not similar to google putting disputed borders all around? I thought they displayed all claims as to be neutral

    29. RAdm_Teabag on

have you had a look at the rest of the world in Google Maps? there are large swaths of the Arabian Peninsula where the names are <clutches pearls> ***in Arabic!!!***

And what the hell is the deal with the largest city in southern Viet Nam? where’d Saigon go? its a stark reminder that Google can be bended (sic) at will to big Communism.
