      * She welcomed the **private €150 billion EU AI Champions initiative** announced yesterday, and announced an **investAI initiative to “top up” these investments by €50 billion**, making it the largest public-private partnership in the world.
      * She said the **EU is investing €10 billion in AI factories, public supercomputers**. That suggests the €1.96 billion initiative will be boosted by some €8 billion. Von der Leyen called it the largest public AI investment, and said it would unlock over ten times more private investments.

      **Another source:**

      * European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Tuesday said **the EU would mobilize a total of 200 billion euros ($206.5 billion) for artificial intelligence investments in Europe**, stressing that the race for AI leadership had not yet been won by China or the U.S.
      * The sum includes previously-announced 150-billion-euro funding from investors and industry, which Von der Leyen announced the bloc will top up by another 50 billion euros.

“We want Europe to be one of the leading AI continents, and this means embracing a way of life where AI is everywhere,” Von der Leyen told an audience of big-name tech figures and political leaders in the French capital.”

Is there a way to opt out of this future?

Meanwhile people are dying in the streets and criminal activity is the highest it has ever been. But lets make the next chat gpt that answers a millions questions wrongly so we can get a few more billions in our bank accounts.

AI will create a lot of jobs, it will be quite beneficial to countries with high levels of tertiary education.

The fact that we are discussing “AI factories” shows the desperation. Mario Draghi’s highly praised plan called for actual industries.

What the hell is an AI factory? Why call it factory? Build a freaking actual factory for God’s sake.

From green industries to AI. Another scam to pour tax payers money down a black hole. I’m sorry but these people in charge are just dumb. They just keep saying what sounds good but every plan they launch fails miserably, and citizens take the brunt of it

There is a slight chance that we are abit late to the party.

I really hope we can pull it off, considering the curent leadership of Von Der Leyen has shows some lack of vision since the very beginning.

What happens if the AI thing is just a bubble and it explodes without giving us anything valuable?

Please let the industry be an English speaking work place so that the best of EU can work in the industry regardless of where the offices are located in the EU. If it is to be a EU united project, we need to unite over a language and prioritise technical and business skills/knowledge over local language. We can’t afford to have an all French or all German version of AI products if we are to compete globally.

€100 billion separately committed by France, €150 billion committed by 60 European companies and €50 billion committed by the EU. That’s €300 billion. Europe woke up.

    12. cookiesnooper on

And let me guess, all this tech and funds will go to French/German companies.

“So how come you’re investing in AI?” “….oh well…”

like do they even know why they’re doing this? And not some generic “it’ll create new jobs” or shit…like why are you invested in AI?

I’d rather the 300b or so get pumped into building up factories for local military production

    14. very happy to see Europe interest in AI

no matter how you personally feel about AI the future will resolve around full automation of the Human workforce, the first wave will impact every white collar worker which is the majority of western jobs but ultimatly it will also replace all blue collar worker

if we leave the AI field to USA and China then we will end up enslaved by any of those country

EU deserve better, we deserve an AI that won’t resolve around US or China economical and geopolitical interest, as an union with history build over socialism and liberty ideology we can and should build a better future for everyone using AI technology as our recent history prove that the US is an unreliable partner we can’t put our destiny in their hands

As an American doing a DS PhD this makes me feel excited as I hope to flee to Europe after my PhD is done . Please defeat my country and China in the AI wars. Europe deserves to win given how much concern they put for consumers and their privacy unlike some other countries.

here’s anothrr idea for the european AI. start producing AI based movies, tv shows and other content that can compete with major productions and can be localized to each language and country with a near perfect voice translation. no more unsynced lips and such. same voices etc. AI special effects. we may finally have a chance in competing with native english contries on that.

We are a decade too late. At least something is being done.
The stupid fiscal policies that EU imposed after 2008 crisis have ruined us, I hope that we learnt a lesson here and that we will start investing in our productive capabilities rather than compete about who is the best lapdog to USA

    19. Maj0r-DeCoverley on

That’s good news, however that money should go in priority to mining and microchips, in publicly controlled enterprises. Otherwise those billions are mainly subsidies we give to China, Taiwan, and the US. Oh and to vague startups that will be bought eventually by China and the US, also.

That money should be invested in **public** endeavors. “Public-private” is just the cool way of saying “socialize the investments, privatize the profits”.

I’m sure glad Europe invests in AI. But “waking up” is something else, and requires actual sovereignty. What we see here is just the usual neoliberal magic trick: take billions of public money, gift them to the private. And so far that magic trick never worked (except to inflate the ultrawealthy’s pockets)

    20. Until someone proves me that this race is won by throwing money at it, I will continue to believe that all this money they are advertising is more with the intention of being diverted and disappearing than to gain anything.
