Unnecessary on our roads.
100% agree the height of the front hits the centre body instead of the legs when involved in hitting a pedestrian so more vital organs damaged.
I hate these, but don’t really like banning stuff to be honest.

Sure, it’s a monstrosity, but literally any car going that speed could kill an adult, let alone a child.
I’ve seen them on the road only in cities and they are enormous. They are not driven by farmers. They are not driven for functionality. They are purely a status symbol and are not necessary whatsoever. I’m all for banning these and similar sized vehicles
That’s not even that big compared to some pick up trucks you’d see in the US. I do agree though they’re not fit for purpose in Irish roads.

Absolutely outrageous driving these in a built up area nonetheless. Their use case is so niche in this country that 99% of their owners are buying them for vanity.
Guy in the housing estate down the road from me got a brand new Ford Raptor. Living in a semi D in a huge built up town.
You can’t just ban them, we need kids to further our population.
To be fair….. anything travelling about 30kph can be fatal to a child regardless of size of the object. A micra would also kill in most cases
There was a big push after the death of Jake Brennan to make housing estates speed limit 20 kph as it was the speed at which “most” collisions would be nominated fatal to a child

No idea why people even buy these, half the roads in Ireland are ancient and tight to drive. Yiz aren’t in Texas lads cop on.
It’s 2.4 tonnes. Same as any other large car or van. Some electric cars are heavier than it.
The simple answer to those who say certain people need it, which they do, is to reclassify it. And require a C licence
Ban everything. Ban the whole fucking lot. Irelands nanny answer to everything. A tragedy happened? Find us something to ban.
Heyyyy regulate these now before they take over. They’re like kudzu and fucking impossible to get rid of once they start to spread. I’ve not been driving at night in Ireland but if you haven’t got issues with LED headlights yet, these trucks will make them.

Out of curiosity, only since you mentioned the driver wasn’t speeding nor on drugs or drunk. What is the survivability of an 8 year old child against any normal sized car at 35 to 37 kph?
In this case did they die on impact with the vehicle (so the size of it directly affected where the child’s head was or something), or when they hit the ground?
For the uninitiated, these SUV type vehicles, especially Jeeps, are far more likely to be lethal versus a pedestrian. Not because of the weight, but because of the height of the bumper/hood/bonnet.
Getting hit by a normal car normally entails getting hit just under your hips and 9 times out of 10 you go up onto the bumper. Not ideal because you can hit your head off the hood or windscreen or when landing. But getting hit by THESE huge yolks means ending up under the damned thing – you get properly ‘run over’. At which point the massive weight does become a factor. Far more dangerous to pedestrians, and especially children.

Banning random vehicles is not going to solve anything. Regulations and awareness help but we will never get the number of road injuries to a place where we are happy because we are talking about humans at the end of the day.
You’ll have to ban all electric cars that are anywhere close to 3 tonnes by that logic and then all SUVs, then vans, trucks ect.
I’m assuming you’re completely removing any blame on distracted driving or eliminating the possibility that the child ran out blindly? (I don’t know what happened and I realise speculation is insensitive here but tbf demanding we ban pickups is a bit far)
I would be grand if we as a society started shaming people who drive big cars for no reason but a ban is a bit silly. Imo.
It doesn’t way 3.5 tonnes, it weighs roughly 2.2 depending on the spec which is no different from most modern SUVs.

I don’t agree. Should we ban busses or trucks and vans? Maybe you should just need to provide a justification on why you need this type of vehicle i.e. I need to tow a trailer, boat, caravan etc. What else was going on that the driver did not see the kid? Did the kid just run out on the road? No winners here, parents will blame themselves, and the driver will live with the guilt for life.
Agree with the sentiment, larger vehicle=larger blind spots and a heavier vehicle will do more damage in a collision; however there’s nothing about a pickup truck that makes it any more dangerous than most cars on the road today, cars in general seem to constantly get bigger, heavier, taller. Just look at the latest BMW X5 compared to the original one from the early 00’s.
The front end of a ranger is no taller than any number of a multitude of makes and models of cars and 4×4’s on the road, it also has a kerbweight of 2200kg (not 3500) which is on par with most 4X4’s and crossovers (almost certain a tesla model 3 or similar will be heavier). So banning them makes little sense, they are a symptom of a bigger trend.
People die in hospitals. Let’s ban them.

I would not lose a night of sleep over oversized US-model cars being banned abroad. Or regulations abroad forcing manufacturers to make normal sized cars for the non-US market. The expense would likely mean we’d get normal sized cars over here too at the very least since international car makers probably wouldn’t spend money to have a regular model and a “jumbo” US model.
Or we’d just lose all foreign car manufacturers.
Which would also suck.
God I hate cars. I hate them everywhere but here in the US I hate them even more.
That truck is one of the smaller trucks here in Canada. Check out a 3500 dually truck. Irelands roads and infrastructure aren’t made for these trucks.
While you’re at it ban buses trucks vans etc, maybe we should go back to the auld ass and cart.
Sure how would you even fit this on some of our small country roads. I drive a relatively small car and even then some of them feel pretty tight!

I was with a friend the other day in a Ford Fiesta on our side if the road with a lovely white line dividing the road in the town. This tank of a vehicle comes towards us way to big, crossing the white line. The driver expected us to reverse out the way because they couldn’t get by and the driver couldn’t reverse it because it was to fecking big for their capabilities.
There’s tonnes of them on the road around where I live and I’ve seen a few bigger trucks so worse it’s getting.
Absolute monstrosities. Farmers wont touch them as they are too big and impractical.
Had one of these pull up behind me at a set of traffic lights and then follow behind me for a period. Headlights completely blinded me as they are up so high there were shining directly into my wing mirrors making it impossible to use them. Crazy they are allowed on the roads.
The crazy part of it is that you cannot see what’s infront of you.
For a normal car or jeep the vast majority of people are visible unless their on all fours, not the case with these, if your on the low end of 5ft your in serious trouble of not being seen walking infront of it.
Tested it in a dealership and had no idea when person was infront and i sit high in seats so have the angle to see. What shocked me was lack of forward sensor to address this issue.
As an American that owns a pick up truck that’s even larger than this (F150) I absolutely cannot imagine driving something this big in Ireland. Sorry but unless you’re a farmer it’s completely unnecessary.
