    1. Accord , are they still.prddlimg that orgsnisations nonsense approach. Catholics advising on marriage in a faith that forbids divorce . It would be laughable if it weren’t so dangerous with their Catholic bs

They forgot insane living costs, long working hours, childcare costs, shifting living standards, collapsing public services…..Modern western society has become highly effective at putting barriers to people having children.

      You’d have to wonder.

Most adults are delaying kids as they want to travel, buy a house and live life a bit. They are prepared to accept the trade off in buying later.

Also many couples don’t want kids, as they are tough work and you go from having free time to zero time. We have an 18 month old so in the trenches so to speak. Great fun, but I can perfectly understand why people wouldn’t want kids.

Dublin Corporation (the equivalent of the time )had an enquiry in 1914 to try and sort out the housing problem in Dublin.
James Connolly’s quote “she will still rule you through her financiers etc” was prophetic.

Ignoring the dubious source of this, it’s a Ponzi scheme. And it’s (hopefully) 5-10 years away from self-destructing.

I think it’s great people are delaying having kids or have decided it’s not the right choice for them.

Too many of my parents generation got married and had kids because that was just what you did and they were totally unsuited to parenting.

I’m happy to have had my kids. But I think on reflection I’d be equally happy with life in a different way if I’d never gotten married and had kids.

I can write the next headlines. Irish people unable to save or are starting pension later in life. Also see Not enough children to support pension scheme. Should Ireland pay people to have more children?

The surprising bit is they needed a survey to find this out.

Having a kid or even being on maternity leave makes a very big difference in a mortgage application, it can easily make or break it. For a lot of people living in rented accommodation, even if they have space and can afford a child, having a child might mean they’ll remain renting for a long time.

A lot of people also have issues with maternity/paternity leaves because they only get the basic minimum from the government, and their employer doesn’t top it up.

Then of course, the next issue is our childcare issues.. it’s both very expensive and there’s lack of supply, which is bad enough to force mothers on anything near average salaries to go on career breaks.
