Of course, All others or nearly all of them are in NATO with a goal to reach in terms of GDP spending. Nothing that we already didn’t know. They should give it a rest with their propaganda blitz when it comes to these articles.

But they do have their own defence industries, so them investing this money actually helps them in the long run. In Ireland’s case, the money would be just leaving the country and not really benefiting the people here.

I feel like that’s the one thing we do right, like we have a population the size of a city, even if we had mandatory services (between 18-20 ) for 2 years are army would only stand at around 100k  … what are we protecting…the border …the fisheries …the president better of having 2 years of young people working as trades people for free college after , we have a housing shortage and will never be at war with anyone

Ireland doesnt need a Standing army to defend itself. It needs a large reserve force trained in guerilla tactics in the case of invasion. We will never be big enough to conventionally oppose an invading nation. So we shouldnt even bother to aim for that. But we should expand the reserves. Otherwise we are expanding for the benefit of other countries and not ousrselves. Edit: i.e if we expand conventionally we would only be able to utilise that in deploying as part of other countries defence.

We should invest in our military. We should not join NATO. And we must set boundaries with the EU and USA.

One day soon, and it will be soon if immigration continues to go unregulated, there will be an attack on Irish soil. This is an uncomfortable likelihood that people aren’t willing to entertain. It might be appear to be jihadist, it might appear to be Russian. Whatever the truth is, there will be an attempt to manufacture consent for beefing up Ireland’s defence and international military ties. Don’t fall for it: be wise to the red herrings and expect more of them in the form of articles and media such as this. The best defence Ireland can have is by remaining a neutral state.


It sounds stupid, but we are so far behind every other country in our surrounding region as well as on a global scale. The UK for all their flaws is not launching an invasion into Ireland, and I doubt France, Spain, Portugal, or Italy will either.

What exactly benefits Ireland pumping hundreds of millions into a military we more than likely will never use? It’s probably just enough to build defensive measures and perhaps some better anti-air technology, but it’s not really much of a muchness.

Ireland seriously needs to increase defence spending so our troops get a proper wage, we get more naval ships and fighter aircraft for the Irish Air Force and more troops in the army.
