It’s far from takeaway coffee’s we were reared.
Moreso then they already are?
The local Bear coffee just raised their flat whites from €3.90 to €4.20 to match Coffee Angel across the road. What once was a daily treat is now turning into a once a week treat.

I used to get a coffee every day on the way to work and the odd one midday. It’s only about a €1 more expensive now than when I was doing that, but something cracked there recently, and it can’t be justified anymore.
Takeaway, pints, meals out gone the same way. Went to a gig last night. Was great, but the ticket and two pints were €75. The price tag is really taking the good out of things the last while.
They do a reasonable job of explaining why the cost has increased in this article to be fair, but it has just become too expensive to justify a lot of thing now.
On the bright side I’m doing home versions of a lot of things now and you can have great craic with it.
If you think that’s bad, I paid €8 for a kids hot chocolate the other day.
We will be giving up cafes as well as the pub at this rate.

Blaming it on the beans is a bit of a lie. It’s more all the other costs going up – labour electric/gas bills.
It’s always cheaper to grind your own. i get 1kg of really nice blend for 6euro.
If you buy yourself a half decent espresso machine and watch a few youtube videos, you can make yourself a nice coffee for about €1.
Obviously, you can buy a jar of maxwell house, but these people aren’t the target anyway.
The cost of the coffee beans is tiny compared to the actual cost of the cup of coffee.

I used to buy a takeaway coffee every morning but since going up to €4.60 I’ve stopped. I purchased a Sage coffee machine and it’s exceeded my expectations.

Bit of a daft measurement to say “a bag” of coffee has gone up from €210 to €600.
How big is this bag? How many coffees does it make? How does that affect your fixed and variable costs?
If he’s buying a 50kg “bag” he’s making like 7000 coffees out of that at 3.50 a pop that’s over 24 and half grand before costs.
You’re a fuck up if you’re losing money on that.

I’ve a moka pot at home that I use almost daily instead, I need to invest in a frother though. I miss that little bit of foaminess from a coffee shop!

I like to close my eyes and make my own world where coffee is free. But we got shareholders who wants us to increase to 1cent.
A lad I went to college did the same degree and started in the same job as me. He’s on his third coffee shop and leads a millionaire lifestyle. I’m not one bit jealous, no sir!
Roasting has always had the highest markup in the production chain, time for them to suck it up rather than fuck with the margins in independent coffeeshops
Haven’t been to the Bald Barista in years so I don’t know if espresso is good there still but for me most of the high end coffee places don’t really do coffee I like. So I’m not going to be paying 4eur for one! I have a Rocket Cellini and good grinder since 2011 and I prefer espresso from my machine.
I’ve never bought coffee out because I never saw it as worth the price, so now I’m even less inclined. The exception are fancy monstrosities like pumpkin spice frappuccinos and black forest gateaux whipped lattes and such, and I only have them maybe once every couple of months when I’m having a day out because they’re essentially coffee desserts.

I think we take for granted how cheap coffee is in general, specially how far it has to come and what the workers who harvest coffee are paid.
I get the cost of beans has gone up sharply, but the gross profit on coffee is ridiculously high, thin margins my arse. There’s a reason there are so many horseboxes converted to coffee selling.
Hopefully it goes up 50c for disposable cup tax soon. Roads and ditches full of the things
Out coffee machine 10 years ago was about €1200. Its on its last legs but we will spend €1500/€2000 for the next one. We wfh most days and it’s an easy profit and better quality.
I buy 2 coffees out per week on top of it but in general the price in any coffee place has a mad mark up. But they need that mark up to survive.
I was surprised to find coffee is dirt cheap in comparison in Australia, far nicer as well.
I’d be more worried if it was tea.
I only get a coffee in town about once a month, but even the current prices would make ya think. Hmmm, do I really want it?
