I honestly don’t care if the UK joins the EU army or not. They are doing everything we would want anyway, and I doubt they would stand on the side if anyone attacked us.

When it comes to hosting an army, in troubled times, it’s either ours or our enemies’.

I would like to see an updated polling on this. My guess is +20% across the board.

    4. Wayoutofthewayof on

Please no. It’s a terrible idea. Countries should focus on their own armies first.

Putin and Trump may try to divide us, but to paraphrase a cinematic masterpiece:

      *Europe together strong*

      Spain 🤝

But why is there no result for Portugal?

    7. Do we have any more recent polls regarding this? would be interesting to have something from 2024

UK try not to be 50/50 on every issue challenge: impossible

i dont think our current government (slovakia) will support EU army in 2025

    10. WilliamWeaverfish on

How would people want this to work? An entirely new purely supranational organisation? Or each country sends 50% of their troops?

pro russia bulgaria gets a spot but Belgium doesn’t? Okay then…

It seems that we all agree for some time already, and probably we agree more than ever now, why don’t we make it happen asap?

Plenty in Britain still haven’t learnt their lesson and would rather be Trump’s bitch.

How can we push this? I was looking for some of these petitions that it can be discussed in the Eu parliament. There is one that you need a million ppl from 7 countries, but i couldn’t start one.

My country´s not even on the list. Noone asked or was the result so horribly low?

    16. Confident_bonus_666 on

I’m thinking an EU army would be catastrophically inefficient. The EU member countries just need to ramp up their defense spending and take the threat from Russia seriously. We don’t need to further increase bureaucratic structures.

    17. Jindujun on

I’d LOVE to have a bucket of popcorn and a front side seat to the discussion on where this army is normally stationed.

That discussion would be a shitshow!

      I love Denmark numbers 🙂

They were always trying to suck up daddy US. Now they are getting “thanks for your service!” treatment!

Some other countries could learn a lot from that.

How people could oppose this at this time is beyond my comprehension

There’s a reason such polls are almost only done with the Eurobarometer, and even then, often only with vague language, such that the 2022 result here is genuinely relatively fresh data:

Because those that would normally pay for such polls at this scale, the states, the parties in power within them, and their associated orgs, know that they would get massively pro-integration results, and they want to continue to ignore the self-evident call to action.

    21. Pellahar on

Imagine Brussels, Germany, Poland, France and like 20 other countries agreeing on how to deploy and use their forces in a sharp situation.
The talks would start as WW3 begun and end just in time for WW6.

    22. SideburnsOfDoom on

The UK wouldn’t be in an EU army anyway.

OK, it’s unlikely that the UK army would be fighting _against_ an EU army. But not impossible.

Perhaps there’s some uneasyness and distrust among UK people about a group that exludes the UK getting organised in a miltary way. 30-35% sounds like it could cover the anti-EU extremists.

The first thing that needs to happen is major constitutional change. For a strong central government. The problem is European countries suffer from old-world nationalism. Europe needs to become collectively European and not individual countries connected via a trade and monetary agreement.

This should have commenced the initial process decades ago when the US was considering reducing its European military presence during the first term of the Clinton presidency. No real action ever gets taken; The can keeps getting kicked down the road.

Many of us in the US, me included, can’t stand Trump either, but what did Europe do when Joe Biden was president? Nothing, even though Joe was demonstrably exhibiting the effects of advanced age. Did you think you were going to get support then? Biden’s team enjoyed the press coverage of a monetary or arms release for Ukraine but then would slow walk it. For entire previous US presidential administration Europe did nothing other than pay Ukraine to keep the mess contained there.

I’m an independent voter and I don’t care for either political party in Washington and I wouldn’t put them in charge of my personal safety and security. Why do you? You manufacture better military equipment. You know what the needs are on that side of the Atlantic. Do expect our politicians to know what’s needed? NATO what a joke that is. Read article 5 as it doesn’t guarantee a military response from every participating country. Wake up!

a lot has changed since 2022, is there a 24/25 variant?

    25. jay_alfred_prufrock on

First thing EU needs is a shared procurement strategy to simplify procurement and logistics/supply chain. EU army would be a logistical nightmare with how many different vehicles and other equipment there is now, even if they mostly use same calibres.

What would be even better is for the existing defence industry companies that work on the same equipment to merge and create one “mega company” that has multiple production lines across the EU instead of constantly going against each other for qualified personnel, resources and sales.

    26. PresidentZeus on

At this point, just make a European subdivision of NATO that is to NATO like any nation’s army. Have it independent from American generals en bureaucrats.

No one sane person believes European troops could be positioned on Greenland without American meddling with today’s NATO.

Brexit was also a good idea, right fellas? Grow a spine. Pretty please. A german friend.

The problem I have with an EU army as a Brit is what happens to the commonwealth?

If Guyana got attacked by Venezuela tomorrow I’m pretty sure Britain would get involved.

However — would the EU army? Too many European countries would say “that has nothing to do with us”.

    29. nicubunu on

I am surprised by the large support in Hungary, despite them continuing to elect Orban.

    30. arealpersonnotabot on

I really don’t understand Polish support for an EU army. Don’t people understand we’d be the ones getting our security interests ignored?

    31. mikey2505 on

Why are we even in this poll? We’ve lost any right to decide what the EU does and doesn’t do?

    32. Astralesean on

2022 is mid covid still. The huge political changes didn’t happen yet
