On January 30, a Russian army drone struck a vehicle belonging to the humanitarian organization “Base UA” during an evacuation operation. Edward suffered the most severe injuries—he had to have his arm and leg amputated.

Edward says he decided to come to Ukraine when he learned that a full-scale war had begun. He wanted to find a way to help Ukrainians.

“I have been following the war since the very beginning of the full-scale invasion. At the time, I was on a boat—I’m a sailor. Ultimately, he decided to focus on humanitarian aid. Since October 2022, he has lived in Ukraine, having left his job and home behind. He joined the humanitarian organization “Base UA.”

On January 30, in Pokrovsk, Donetsk Oblast, a Russian drone struck an armored evacuation vehicle. At the time, Edward and his colleague Philip were transporting two residents from the city. Edward sustained the most severe injuries. According to him, it was Philip who saved his life.

“We were in the northwest of the city, just about to head out on the road to Hryshyne when it happened. We were just ordinary people and volunteers. There we were, driving a white van clearly marked for volunteering and evacuation. There were two of us—I was driving, and my colleague Philip, a Ukrainian, was next to me. We had two residents of Pokrovsk with us who we were evacuating,” Edward recalls.

“There was just a powerful flash, an explosion. I tried to keep driving, but then I realized I was moving my shoulder, yet my hand wasn’t moving on the wheel. That’s when I knew it was bad. I looked down, and my leg was just shattered.”

Edward calls the actions of russian forces a war crime and believes that more people around the world need to know about it.

Doctors did everything possible to keep him alive during the evacuation stages. He was brought to the hospital in extremely critical condition. He received nearly six liters of blood transfusions—he had lost a massive amount of blood.
