I’m surprised this seems to have slipped under the radar. Because it seems it’ll have drastic consequences for specialist beers, wines and spirits.
All alcohol products will be required to have individual bespoke labels with a warning, and, among other things, calorie and alcohol content. That’s not information that’s publicly available for most drinks. So it’s not something shops and importers can add by themselves.
Once this comes in next year, the only alcohol products available will be those who voluntarily make Ireland-specific labels.
Print a sticker a put it on the bottle. Easy
I’m shocked we need to have labels tbh. Maybe I’m naive because I’m educated but surely at this stage we’re aware of the dangers excess alcohol consumption has on our bodies.

A load of scare mongering. It’ll be no different from when they changed the warning labels on chemicals a few years back. There’ll be a start date from which the new labels must be applied to newly manufactured products and at the same time there will be a grace period of a couple of years to allow existing products to be sold and cycled through the supply chain, after which they must be removed from sale or a sticker with the new warning must be put on it

The nutritional information on bottles was common in Russia and Eastern Europe many years ago.
Whilst it may not be printed on all products in the West, it is a growing trend, and where not available on the bottle, is easily findable by going to the website of major retailers such as Tesco.

Are we not meant to have an open EU market. Why is our euro mep, or commissioners not fighting this.
Really believe that all this serves to do is push people into the arms of the “utter woke nonsense” freaks. Nobody seriously doubts that alcohol can be harmful, and labelling will not stop significant numbers of people buying the products. I’d be more optimistic that consistently advertising zero drinks instead of alcoholic ones is more likely to reduce alcohol consumption simply because it solves FOMO instead of promising a health benefit far down the line.
This is not a real story – you run a business, I’m sorry the drug you’re selling has negative health effects but you don’t get to act like you are a pilar of rhe community – don’t vote FF/FG if you don’t want drink taxed move every year.
This is a prime example of an attempt at a fluff story that comes across as just sad and lazy journalists.
Maybe don’t sell alcohol as your business’s main focus then.
Its like landlords giving out that tenants want what the law intitles them too.

Knowing the calories is great, hard enough to keep things in check as it is with everything being calorie heavy processed slop everywhere you go these days. Having a drink can be Russian roulette if your tracking your macros.

I’d get if they brought it in for the long term. Wines dated 2025+ for example and only for large retailers with 10m turnover for example.
But this is just a stark example of how out of touch politicians and civil servants are with small businesses. The back bones of our society.

Wouldn’t surprise me if this is part of a wider PR campaign. I know someone who was in PR for a big multinational drinks firm. Travelled to Brussels often to lobby the powers that be on this very subject.
Edit: the point being the whole industry is behind not making this labelling a reality. Like the tobacco industry back in the day, fighting the fight

Why the urge to over-regulate things?
Just f stop drinking this poison its 2025 all sellers of this shite should lsoe their jobs and figure out better ways to support humanity than selling misery in a bottle
