I can’t imagine what would have happened if he had mentioned her height.

The free speech party wanting to send people to jail for opinions!

      EVERY ACCUSATION A CONFESSION

Calling Meloni a “piece of shit fascist and a Nazi” is just an accurate description.

      **TL;DR:**

      • British rock star Brian Molko charged after ‘calling Italian PM a piece of s*** fascist and a Nazi’ during gig. The Placebo frontman had been performing at Italy’s Sonic Park festival 2023.

      • Italian PM Giorgia Meloni has been urged to change the country’s strict defamation laws. Over 5,000 lawsuits for defamation are filed against Italian journalists annually.

      • Up to 90% are typically rejected as groundless, according to figures from the Italian press freedom organisation Ossigeno per l’informazione. The Italian PM’s government is viewed as the most-wing in Italy since Mussolini in World War 2.

      • The case prompted British author Sir Salman Rushdie to tell Meloni to ‘grow up’ in a letter to the Prime Minister from the Mail on Sunday. The letter read: ‘I am the prime minister of the Republic of Italy.

      • I am not a racist or a fascist, I am a human being. I have a right to express my opinions.’.

If every Italian citizen victim of defamation started to report it and were eventually awarded 5,000 Euros instead of seeing the perpetrator going to prison, I’m pretty sure this defamation law would be eventually ruled out. This is such an arbitrary, ridiculous piece of legislation right there.

Time to rip all my old Placebo albums from CD to MP3 so I can binge them on my phone for the next week.

In Italy we are quite litigious on things people say.
We can charge for defamation pretty much anything said or written, and the jury system just wastes a lot of time on a lot of “dismissed” cases.

This is between politicians, press and politicians, people and whatever really. This government has been quite adamant in doing so when it feels insulted.

I think in UE the two top countries for numbers of defamation charges are Germany and Portugal though.

Freedom of speech my ass. Somehow freedom of speech is always limited in rightwing countries…

Probably he thought, not without basis, she would like it.

But honestly, what about free speech now, Rightoids?

Lots of comments about insults being free speech, sorry doesnt work like that in italy.

If it was a private person I could understand, but the literal leader of a country should be fair game to be slandered or attacked.

These posts seem like a new campaign after Vance’s speech about freedom of speech in Europe.

Never seen so many Americans being startled about European personal right laws. Seems fishy to me.

Nothing says “I’m not fascist” like pressing charges against artists for their statements

It is funny that you got charged nowadays for speaking out the truth.

    17. Melvin_2323 on

Isn’t this what JD Vance just spoke about, causing the Germans to break down in tears?

Meanwhile media and celebrities are calling the US president the same thing and it’s fine

    19. Apparently it was a ‘police complaint’. Not surprising…

Lol people forget many (most) countries do not have free speech in their constitution or laws.

What happened to freedom of speech and the 1st amendment?
