Basically “if Russia agrees to make it a UN peacekeeping mission”.

This is why they are in the process of bringing forward legislation to drop the UN leg of the triple lock – otherwise Russia (or any of the UNSC) effectively decides where we can send our own troops.

We need to reassess our neutrality. It’s entitled to expect Europe to defend us without any meaningful contribution. The fact is we are not neutral, we are aligned with European values and democracy. We can’t expect young Europeans to die fighting for these values while we hide behind the concept of neutrality that was born of our independence and the geo political landscape at the time. Things are much different now.

Only allowed if the security council permits it. Unless the triple lock is removed

For peacekeepers (not makers) there needs to be peace. Ukraine is an active warzone.

Yeah, the Brits and French are just waiting on a few hundred badly equipped paddys

Just for anyone being conned by the liars/misinformed in this thread. The triple lock relies on a vote from the UNSC OR the UN general assembly. Not both.

    8. I used to be fiercely proud of Irish neutrality, but I think it’s time we get our head out of our asses.

We need to align more closely with the European armies.

We can’t keep hiding in the usa’s backpocket, they are showing themselves to be really unreliable.
The orange scumbag, they elected twice, would sell us and all of Europe out in a second if it made him richer.

Putin would attack us if he thought he’d get away with it.
We need our army matched with EU priorities, not the UN

The EU needs to get to work on its own version of the iron dome.

Which is functionally the same as not having a role.

So the peace enforcement army needed in Ukraine post war needs to be 200,000 strong, with rotation and leave you can treat that number more like 600-800K troops, nvm logistics and all the rest. The European army needs a lot more than just Ireland to take part to up its game.

No point debating this one lads, we do need to increase defence spending, but we’d be much better off offering money than people.

Our overseas forces are a drop in the bucket compared to what’s needed.
