I hope so they do some rapid moves in that direction. Otherwise we are all cooked for the centuries to come.
I’ve said the same for years. It’s why this current narrative about sidelining infuriates me. It’s self victimisation. It’s weak framing. We have no obligation to care in the slightest about what Russia and America decide without us, about us. They’re the ones that invalidate their own efforts this way.

The more I read about this guy, the more I think he’s the right guy not just for Germany but for Europe as well.
Big government makes bullies, IMO what we really need is a federation with weak central government with control of power (military) and regulatory power and more of a city-state style of regional control (so even smaller countries than the EU and with no regional militaries).
The EU seems to be the closest to this yet, but I don’t think consolidating even more power into the union is a good idea overall. Regulatory and legislative yes, but not executive. Maybe some common frameworks for public services that can be (fully or partially) opted-out by members.
Most of the BS in the world comes from big/powerful countries bullying other countries around. China, Russia, US, to a lesser extent India and the UK farther back.

I really can’t emphasize enough how terrible Merkel and Scholz have been for Europe. Merz hates them both and that is a good thing. He comes from the policy tradition of Konrad Adenauer. He gave a big foreign policy speech the other week and said he wants to deliver Macron’s vision. Finally we will have a functional Germany again that can push the EU forward. France and Germany have a huge influence on the 🇪🇺 Commission, Parliament and Council.
No single nation in EU has the power to stand against either US or Russia. So politians need to realize this and act accordingly. Even the far right will eventually need to end with euro-sceptic policies.
You guys keep electing weak losers. That’s why you’re not seen as an equal anymore. Keep electing career pencil pushers. Good luck.
Time to wake the lion, get the UK back in the EU. Create the EU army with EU equipment and start standing up for ourselves. Invite Canada to closer ties with the EU.

Just last night he proposed sth on TV he was not aware of being unconstitutional. He is not interested in ceding german power to Brussels and will say “oh well we didn’t know that’s necessary when i made promises”.

Oh please! Merz has more in common with Trump than with Europe. He’s just campaigning and will say whatever gets him votes.
Both Merz and Trump:
* Use populist rhetoric while claiming to be “for the people.”
* Push strict immigration policies and attack asylum seekers.
* Fuel culture wars against “woke” policies and gender debates.
* Support big business and deregulation, prioritizing corporate interests.
* Flirt with the far-right while pretending to keep distance.
Merz wants to appear pro-Europe, but his economic and social views align much more with Trump-style conservatism than with mainstream European politics.

Common military, common foreign policy, but keep the local autonomy in other matters.
I know Merz isn’t perfect, far from it, but I am convinced that he can lead us through the current crisis and come stronger out it in the end.
Which is why I am voting CDU.
FYI: the same dude said in January 2025 that he wants to buy more arms from the USA to fulfill the NATO 5% and he sent a handwritten letter to Trump for his inauguration. Furthermore he said in February 2025 that he wants to protect Germanies borders and go hard on illegal immigration which in detail would break the German constitution, laws of the EU Constitutional Court and break the Schengen agreement.
He worked several years for Black Rock and his parties plan would cost the taxpayers 200 billion euros while keeping the debt break without any plan on how to finance it.
Merz sucks and he says something different, contradicting the Merz of two weeks ago, as soon as the next poll comes in. He cannot be trusted.
Oh and he was willing to accept the votes of the Neonazi AFD for his proposition on a 5 points immigration plan on Holocaust memorial day, causing outrage in german politics and protests in many german citys.
“Frontrunner” Merz and Adenauer are at the same age. So they don’t only share the haircut.
