Pensieri?

Lux PM supports stronger EU defence , impact in the long term?

    1. Where did you get the 5%? It’s 2%.

Now, given the circumstances, I do believe countries should be spending 4%+ and Luxembourg doesn’t get to be the exception. You don’t get to freeload.

I will gladly pay more taxes if that means European sovereignty is protected rigorously.

according to the latest agreement, EU wants to spend 700 billion, which equates to 1500 EUR per person all over EU, i guess the richer western EU countries will take a bigger share. However, it’s important that this 700b stays in the EU economy and doesn’t go to buying US equipment.

      >Only three countries in the EU meet the target of Nato spending (5%)

Note that the current target is 2%. I don’t think any NATO country spends 5%

    4. Surrendering Ukraine would have a worse impact.

This war has taught us we need far more ammunition stockpiled and much greater local manufacturing capacity.

It’s also not a zero sum between that and infrastructure spending. Expanding that capacity will also generate jobs that will pay taxes and feed money back in as tax revenue.

Who cares what Lux PM thinks in terms of defence?

Luxembourg’s NATO contribution is not calculated via GDP.

5% is just a silly number. What is more important is a good strategy, cutting the pork and really getting most bang for your investment.

What is needed is a comprehensive strategy to counter Russia and future belligerents and based on that make defense budgets. Anyways Europe needs to work together for a join procurement to cut cost on military gear and have more integration of all the different systems each country uses.

‘ i am afraid it will have an impact in the long term.’

Russia will also have an impact long term if they continue fucking around… People still seem to ignore that we are for years already in a massive hybrid war with Russia. Massive DDOS attacks, severed undersea cables, assassinations committed by Russian services on EU territory, election interference, financial contributions to far right parties etc.
