“The government cut several social benefits last year, in an effort to balance public finances. The move was expected to push more people into social assistance. However, figures from the Social Insurance Institution Kela show that while this did not happen, the cost of funding social assistance still increased significantly.

Last year, nearly 250,000 households in Finland received social assistance. Kela paid out a total of 825 million euros, which is 95 million euros more than in 2023.

Kela researcher Tuija Korpela said several factors contributed to the rising cost of this last-resort benefit. These include cuts to social security and the inclusion of Ukrainian refugees in the social welfare system.”
