Motor insurance has continued to rise despite the fact that payouts are down 30%
It’s amazing how the insurance lobby managed to convince the public and the government that the reason for high premiums was high awards. Even after the awards were slashed at the request of the insurance lobby the premiums haven’t come down.
So we are now paying more for insurance, if we get into an accident we get a smaller payout and we should be happy about it? Damages are not going to go up with inflation yet premiums will?
Even my staunchly FG dad has started to really admire Pearse Doherty over the last few year, the only politician not parroting lines of lobbyists.
What progress?
This thread is going to give me an aneurysm because people can never have an honest conversation around insurance
If we take motor as an example, payouts are not down. Injury awards are down, but total claims costs are up as other costs such as material damage expenses go up.
*”The average premium paid by consumers for motor insurance in Ireland last year rose 2% to €568, the first increase in five years.
It comes as the cost of a claim per policy rose by 5% in 2023 to €369, bringing it back near pre-Covid levels in 2019.”*

Insurance premiums have not seen the same levels of inflation as we’ve seen elsewhere. The average motor premium in 2018 was €708. The average motor premium in 2023 was €568. What other product is cheaper now than it was in 2018?
So quite clearly they do pass on savings, they’ve just been offset by other costs. Insurance will never get cheaper if people refuse to address the issues and just instead spout constant misinformation
There has been progress in the motor insurance sector? For who, the insurance companies?
Who warned them?
Are we still pretending premium prices didn’t go up because of simple greed on the part of insurance companies?
lol what progress? It’s higher than ever,
Warned by whom?
