It’s exciting how the media change moods. Now that we as Europe are going to save Ukraine, I suggest that we all quickly look at the big picture again. There is no question that we have to stand together against Putin. But everything that Russia is rightly accused of could also be levelled at the USA and its allies for 70 years. Ukraine was a highly corrupt and unstable country before this war, the two presidents before Selensky were an absolute imposition. But when the media decide that Putin is the new Hitler (just as they have been doing for 70 years, sometimes it’s Hussein, sometimes Bin Laden, sometimes Assad or now Putin again) then we uninvolved people all quickly forget what happened yesterday. And I think Ukraine has no place in the EU and also no place in NATO, because it does not fulfil the criteria of a democratic constitutional state. And while we still have the Putin problem as Europe, we also have to build up Ukraine. This is a huge opportunity that we are throwing away if we pretend that everything has always been above board in Ukraine.
Why don’t people read history anymore. Just social media will do it.
Russia has never been anything than an enemy of the rest of Europe. It’s a “Prisoner of Geography”, and the only way it sees a solution to this is through conquest. It has never been a true democracy either, so negotiation and compromise are seen as weak.

The question is rather what was expected in 2014 and from the Euromaidan.
The point is this: Crimea is Russia’s largest base with links to the Black Sea, the Middle East and the Mediterranean.
Russia paid rent for the use of Sevastopol. An annexation of Ukraine to NATO would have made this obsolete. NATO does not permit the permanent stationing of foreign military forces on the territory of a member state, especially if they are not members of NATO.
It was therefore very clear what would happen. America, for example, would never have allowed such a loss of its own national interests and would have prevented it by force of arms.
