Sean, your generation did literally everything the church told them to including turning a blind eye to their crimes, so its quite rich hearing Gen Z getting this label
Edit: I unfairly phrased this the first time, so I updated it to be more accurate

I don’t know about anyone else but any time I read gen Z/gen x/millenial/boomer or whatever other generation outside of an American context, I immediately switch off. a pretty meaningless description with no basis in fact.

Does this mean I can finally now put ‘cynically manipulated’ in my bio?

Saying they’re the most cynically manipulated is basically saying ‘Gen Z cares more than anyone else and we took advantage of that’ which is absolutely true, other than Gen Z men obviously somethings wrong with those fks.
I would say they aren’t any more manipulated in general than any other generation, bar the boomers and the likes who still think there’s an invisible sky daddy ready to condemn them to hell if they step out of line 💀 I’d say that’s real cynical manipulation right there

Cynically manipulated? I’m not sure it was the zoomies who returned this government we are stuck with!

I don’t know. The Boomers in this country have been voting for the same 2 ineffective parties for decades. Anyone on the fence was swayed by a giveaway budget that really doesn’t make any in roads in fixing the systemic issues here.
In any case – this generational comparison is meaningless and shouldn’t distract us from the actual comparison that matters- class and income inequality.

Some of the generational stuff doesn’t apply here. Boomers for example aren’t really the same thing here at all. There was no significant postwar boom, in fact the population hit an all time low by the early 60s. Our baby boom was from about 1977-1990. So the ‘boomers’ here are in their 30s and 40s, yet are also sharing many of the features of US Gen X / early millennials in terms of tech and pop culture.
The same influences in terms of internet stuff definitely hits the group called Gen Z though.
I think though we need to be careful about just assuming US trends apply entirely here. They don’t and the two places have actually been on divergent tracks — Ireland became a lot more socially progressive very rapidly in the 90s and 00s just as the U.S. the began to see the rise of the Red Neck Revolution and MAGA drag it backwards.
At present social attitudes in Ireland are far more in line with Northern Europe and the UK than with the U.S. — but there is plenty of bleed over occurring online and you’re definitely seeing some Gen Z types absorbing MAGA talking points.
I think we need to be careful though that we don’t just join the U.S. culture war. They’re currently a bit obsessed with labelling and pitting generations against each other in the weirdest ways online. They’ve become like tribal identities instead of just a structure to aid science researchers.

Manipulated ? This is verbatim what i overheard in a sauna over the weekend from a ~65 year old, salt of the earth Dublin women “There’s murder on Facebook! the Irish prime minister wants to send Irish troops to fight in Ukraine”.
I just sat there in silence… we just don’t live in the same reality.

Last time I heard this guy on the radio it was a multi hour long segment, with multiple guests, about how terrible it is the cardboard is going to be removed from toilet rolls.
If anyone is manipulated it’s him and his generation.
