Tesla sales plummeted in Europe in January, suggesting waning demand for the US carmaker’s vehicles after its billionaire chief Elon Musk stepped up his high-profile interventions in the region’s politics.

The EV maker sold just 9,900 units in Europe last month, a decline of more than 45 per cent from the same period in 2024, according to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association. Its overall share of new car registrations fell to 1 per cent from 1.8 per cent over the same period.

Tesla’s falling market share comes after Musk’s unprecedented foray into EU politics, where he backed the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) ahead of the country’s elections, sparking a backlash on the continent. Musk has also railed against the EU, which he described in November as “undemocratic”.

The fall came even as European consumers purchased 166,000 battery EVs for the month, up 37 per cent from a year ago. Pure EV sales grew faster than those of all other types of vehicles, while sales of cars with petrol and diesel engines fell 20.5 per cent and 26.5 per cent, respectively.

The figures include the EU, UK and other markets including Norway, one of Europe’s biggest markets for EVs.

European sales by SAIC Motor, the Chinese state-backed carmaker that has expanded into the EU and partnered with Audi in China, rose 37 per cent to 23,000 vehicles in January, among the largest year-on-year increases in sales of any large manufacturer in the region.

Overall new vehicle registrations on the continent fell by 2.1 per cent in January to 995,271.

They will go down even further when people begin to associate the drivers of said vehicles with the views of the carmakers owner.

Good. Instead of fearing what we’ll do, politically, look at who Americans are boycotting. The mass population hates Russia and Elon and have been sick of them for a while. Protests growing. Activists activating. Last us do our “sleeping giant” thing once more. We’re ready for real change. The main wants to be happy again like before 9/11 or 11/9, as you write.

      Great news.
I would love to read the same about McDonald’s, KFC, Burguer King, Apple, Starbucks, etc.

Any suggestion that a potential buyer could be accused of liking or agreeing with Musk’s views is enough to make people buy an alternative. Further, by buying an alternative they can then make the statement that they did so as a deliberate choice, underlying their own “correct” beliefs and by telling everyone this it puts another nail in the Tesla coffin.

They’ll likely drop even further. Musk was once viewed in some circles as an eccentric pioneer who cared about the environment, among other things.
That image is now shattered, and he’s rightly perceived as a petty little man with low self-esteem, focused on hurting people he dislikes.

    8. The fact the TSLA stock price isn’t collapsing with their CEO going AWOL and their sales taking an apocalyptic hit due to what is probably the greatest brand degeneration in automotive history is all you need to see that the current market is a bubble.

Tesla sold to liberal green white collars while their CEO is actively doing everything he can to piss that demographic off.

This is before they start rolling them into the Boston harbor.

I wonder, who is going to buy Tesla in the future.

      Europe? No.
      California? Even less so.
      China? Laughable.

The Saudis? There is some potential here.

The only potential ally I can fathom is Japan, as they sided with us Germans nicely last time. But I’m pretty sure that market ain’t big enough, plus I’m really uninformed how they are currently aligning in world politics…

All that considered – what happens with Elons wealth as soon as Tesla goes out of business? Because I don’t assume they have enough cash to go through another valley.

      Asking for a friend.

Can Tesla get rid of Musk?

As someone who fully endorses EVs I think the company deserves credit for getting us to where we are today. Many people see the company and the man as one and the same, but I don’t think that’s fair to the people who actually built the company. It seems to me all that Musk provided was funding and sales patter. The man is a greedy parasite who moves from one investment opportunity to the next.

Noone wants to buy nazi techbro products in Europe thats why

    13. Special_Abrocoma_318 on

To put this into perspective: Europeans bought 34% more EVs year-to-year, and Tesla still sold 45% less. Pretty insane.

I dont live in EU and already decided never to buy tesla.
It is not Elons job to meddle with other peoples countries. He clearly overstepped his boundaries.

      He should have known better.

    17. I’ve had my Y for nearly 3 years now and went to sell it a few weeks. Sadly the financial hit is too much at the moment, but as soon as I can it’ll be gone.

The moment musk threatened to take Tesla private a couple of years ago I decided to never invest in his company. Absolute freak. Untrustworthy

    19. “They don’t take our cars, they don’t take our farm products, they take almost nothing and we take everything from them. Millions of cars, tremendous amounts of food and farm products”

      Donald J.Trump

Yep. And as a matter of fact, of Elon continues to salute more, we will take even less. The reliability of American cars other than Fords is low. There’s just no point in buying a brand new American car.

Also, US food is not good, so why should we take it when we have more than enough and better quality.

Me, who can not afford one: “I’m doing my part!”

To be clear, I used to want one, but couldn’t afford it. I still can’t afford one, but I no longer want it.

…due to the purchase of all electric cars being down.

People are going for hybrids as a result of EU rules etc
