Il 26 febbraio 2014, 6000 persone pro-Ukraine si sono radunate di fronte al parlamento di Crimea a Simferopol per bloccare 700 pro-russiani che cercavano di prenderlo d’assalto. Il giorno successivo, le forze speciali russe sotto l’agente GRU Igor Girkin (Strelkov) hanno preso d’assalto il parlamento della Crimea.
