Covid was relatively great for some.
I was living abroad in countries with very restrictive stay at home measures for most of 2020. I have spoken about this in therapy. Inject the vaccine into my eyes or even my… because it will be a cold day in hell before I lockdown again.
There’s very little drama set in lockdown.
There’s a few behind the scenes political things. Some medical drama about what it was like for hospitals.
Superstore the sitcom had a few good jokes on how retail staff were treated. Bo Burnham inside has a few songs about how boring it was. What else?
I understand that no one wants to watch depressing stuff in a sitcom. But if the whole experience is memory holed that means we can’t learn from it as well and make better choices in future.
Look, it was something that scientists have been warning about for decades and it could easily happen again in my lifetime. It’s the kind of thing we need to have plans for and be able to move fast in response to developments and I think we did quite well in that regard.
Maybe I’m just more pragmatic but I don’t see lockdown as a traumatic event or as “dark days”. It was a difficult time, sure, but we’re on the precipice of war in Europe so suffering lockdowns and restrictions is kind of small beans.
Had the time of my life
All the lads at home playing warzone getting dinners brought to us
Working from home became a thing, at home 3 days a week now
I didn’t mind the first few months and the weather was great during that time. Then I started college in September 2020 in a new town and was very isolated. Couldn’t go home as placements were still going ahead at that time. Throughout 2020-2022 college was just shit and very isolating. I felt very depressed too. I wouldn’t be able to hack another lockdown.
There is one video that perfectly captures what that period was like and how the effects of it still echo in our information landscape. It features the model Caprice on morning television:
