And because it’s Ireland, we’d rather pay the fines than to take that money and invest it now as an emergency fund into climate projects.

After decades of what should have been seen as unforgivable actions by the electorate, surely this one might wake people up to the incompetence of FFG? Right? Nah, probably not.
More carrots less sticks please.
How can the west compete with China in green tech, It’s impossible. If these technologies proliferate from a price perceptive the energy transition will be much easier. No need for carbon taxes etc just good old fashioned market price signals. People will vote with their wallets. The government can create subsidies for the poor. Young people can become installers and maintainers of the tech.
It’s a bit more problematic in countries like Ireland with rubbish solar resources. I’m right behind this and perhaps now we can turn down the rhetoric on the climate hysteria and let the market do its thing without crazy fines like these. This is not the way to bring people on the journey of energy transition. It just antagonizes them and makes them cynical of power hungry technocrats.

No fines are going to be imposed on any country. There is a strong rightward move away from Green policies in Europe. All you have to do to see that is look at the composition of the current European Parliament.

The targets will get moved. There won’t be fines. Europe is gearing up militarily. Environmental focus is going to fall away. Environmental policies have been rejected in elections all across Europe. When governments all across Europe are going to start putting money into defence it will have to come from somewhere and that will be unpopular environmental fines.
I am not saying it’s a good thing. Just what I see happening.
Best bet is to try and roll environmental issues into defence talk. Like, we need more wind and solar to become self sufficient. We need to improve farming practices and taking care of the land so we can feed ourselves and then Europe. We need more interconnectors to ensure a market for electricity export.

Well FFG are not going to upset the farmers are they? So fuck the environment.

Russia and china barely had to lift a finger and europe is disintegrating from within because of political correctness. They must be amazed..

That will definitely help this country to reduce emissions more in the future and definitely not make it even harder…

Huge numbers of EU citizens are not going to be paying climate fines. Dead on arrival.

These fines won’t happen. Sadly, the world is swiftly moving on and ignoring the crisis.

Well no fixing the housing crisis, the hospital backlog or new prisons then. And absolutely no figher jets. The dream was sweet while it lasted.

So are we going to start making Amazon pay their taxes yet or not?

These fines rely on a trading scheme where EU countries that meet targets sell their credits to countries that do not.
As things stand, the vast majority of EU countries, including the biggest ones like Germany and Italy, will not meet their targets. So there simply won’t be enough credits to be traded, so the scheme is not going to work at all.
In addition, even lack of credits aside, Germany would be on the hook for 10+ times what Ireland is as things stand. There is not a hope in hell of Germany paying €260bn+ in fines. Or Italy paying similar.
And then theres the fact that Green parties across Europe have been decimated. The Green agenda / focus is going to be entirely replaced by the need to rebuild Europe’s militaries for the next 5 years of EU policymaking.
All of which means the targets will be significantly watered down or just gotten rid of entirely. This is just our media republishing sky-is-falling press releases from environmental NGOs unquestioningly.

Ample time given to the Fiscal Advisory Council and the Climate Change Advisory Council this morning on RTE News. Neither mentioned, nor were they asked about, cutting the out-of-control numbers of cattle. No one is taking this seriously. Farmers rule.
