*This is a column I never dreamed I’d be writing, as a former supreme allied commander of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. But sadly, given all the skeptical and increasingly divisive rhetoric about the venerable alliance emanating from Washington and Europe in the early days of the second Donald Trump administration, it is time to think about what the world would look like geopolitically if the US pulled out.*

*Are we indeed in the last days of NATO? What would replace it, if anything? Or, if it survived, what would NATO look like without the US?*

Musings from Trump sycophants really don’t move the ball. They do what their master demands. If he wants to pull out, we will pull out.

Interesting opinion article, although I don’t know if European countries will rather align with China in case the United States leave NATO.

Also, the article highlights the advantages for the United States to have those military bases on European ground and seas.

I’d really like to hear from US military how they’d react if Trump decides to pull the United States out of NATO. I mean, they were and fought side by side with troops from many European countries and then they would become strangers, if not from a hostile country.

Good, we need to form a new alliance without USA. Then when the time comes, we will strike and put down the US once and for all.

    5. BulldogMoose on

2/3 of the US Senate will need to approve leaving. You can’t get 2/3 of the US Senate to agree on the colour of the sky. They’ll argue about the hues.

    6. -------7654321 on

Why trust the US now? Even if Trump tomorrow says NATO is good, then we know he is capable of holding us hostage later down the road. There is nothing else to do than decouple.

    7. Ohr_Ein_Sof_ on

I think the premise of the article is incorrect.

If the US leaves NATO, it doesn’t mean that it can’t engage in bilateral security and defense agreements with other current NATO members.

We do that in Asia, actually. There is no NATO there. There is no mutual defense clause between the South Koreans and the Japanese or between the Philippines and Thailand, for example. We do have regional bodies to make sure nobody steps on others’ toes, but our engagements with each of these countries are one-to-one.

To return to the current topic, I can’t see how Italy and the US won’t cooperate in the Mediterranean, given Italy’s location and the length of its coastline.

Another example is Turkey. Whatever differences exist between Trump and Erdogan, there are common interests between the two countries, so at least some form of intelligence sharing would be in place.

Finally, of course, Poland. I can’t see the two countries not cooperating whether the US is still in NATO or NATO exists at all.

Getting rid of NATO would basically end America’s period of preeminence.

      Incredibly shortsighted by them.

    9. Dangerous_Depth_5926 on

If the US leaves NATO or NATO disintegrates, Turkey should go its own way. The Europeans must pay the price for excluding and humiliating us. They treated us the same way Trump treated them. They will no longer have to think about “how to kick Turkey out of NATO” or shout to our faces “You are not part of Europe”…

    10. HomarEuropejski on

Why is it the end? Why can’t we just continue NATO, but simply without People’s Republic of Murica?

    11. No_Donkey456 on

The key point here is that whether or not the US is in NATO, we can no longer depend on them to honour article 5 without demanding something ridiculous like half of the mineral extraction profits for decades to come. We’ve seen how trump treats close partners like Canada, and international agreements clearly mean nothing to him (climate accords for instance).

Consequently , we have to expand our military capacities irrespective of whether the US stays in NATO or not.

Even if the Democrats took over tomorrow there is always the possibility of a second Maga-esque president down the line as that voter base is now established. Irrespective of what course the Americans take now we have to become a military powerhouse in our own right.

Trump obviously never heard the phrase let sleeping dogs lie, he’s after creating direct competition for the entire US defense industry.

Meanwhile just today the commander of the Finnish navy said cooperation with NATO and the US remains unchanged and all going well. I guess he’s just spreading Russian propaganda. Smh.

Credit where credit is due. This is some huge victory for putin and the fsb.

“And for all our frustration with the Europeans, the US will ultimately want them to help us face the ever-increasing Chinese threat in the Pacific. ” rofl this is hilarious …. Europe needs to send a f u , not my problem message to the usa. After what they did to Ukraine, Europeans would be taken as suckers if they would send any help whatsoever to the usa. The move should be to make a side deal with China and send the americans a nice middle finger.

We need a cool name for our own NATO, I propose New Alliance for Peace, Operations, and Legitimate European Offensive Network

    16. salemcilla on

so basically NATO only has been used in favor of the US and now we’re fucked after selling our souls to them

    17. Frenzystor on

Nah, we just kick out USA and go on. Maybe replce “North Atlantic” with “European”

    18. Hour-Cheesecake5871 on

Replace it without the US, Turkey, Hungary, and Slovakia and you’ll be good to go.

Name proposal for the EU alliance: EUDAS – European Union Defence Alliance System

    20. The apathy of the general public in the US really is a miserable thing to witness. All it takes for evil to reign is for good people to do nothing (and sit on their asses, enjoying the life their ancestors fought for)

“With the Americans out, and the Russians trying to get in, the Europeans won’t be held down.”

      Sounds about right!

    22. Moritz-der-Stecher on

“To keep the Germans down, the Americans in, and the Russians out.”

It is time for us to stand up and take our place in the defense of Europe alongside our allies.

    23. Hyper_Mazino on

If NATO can be so easily broken because of the US then it would’ve never helped in a serious case anyway.

NATO is more than just the US.

      NATO will be fine.

    24. Major__Factor on

America is not trustworthy and their credibility has been shattered to smithereens. We should get out anyway. This is not going to get better.

    25. The_Duke28 on

Thats good! For once they read the obvious signs correctly. It’s just a matter of time until trump pulls the plug. Better be prepared!

    26. coffeeandexplore on

US exploited NATO to fight their war for them and then all they’ve done since is whine. We’ll be better off without the US in the long run, but we must reform in a way that doesn’t just allow them back in when they get a Democrat in power.

    27. TwentyCoffees on

The US might need our help in the Pacific? After this?

Remind them they need to be more grateful for the help they were given when they were the only country to ever invoke article 5, and they can come and talk to us when they’re ready for peace.

    28. thunderc8 on

So Russia actually did it, with only one orange agent. Damn America fucked things up pretty hard.
