Sir Keir Starmer and Emmanuel Macron are planning to accompany Volodymyr Zelensky to Washington to salvage his relations with Donald Trump.

The visit is part of a three-pronged plan by Kyiv’s European allies after a dramatic spat in the Oval Office between US and Ukrainian presidents led Washington to suspend military support for the war-torn nation.

Both London and Paris were left “deeply frustrated” by the row and have told Mr Zelensky that he must do more than sign the minerals deal to convince the White House to restart weapons supplies to Ukraine.

Diplomatic sources told The Telegraph that the Ukrainian president was advised to demonstrate remorse and then agree to sit down for detailed discussions on peace proposals.

In a tweet on Tuesday, Mr Zelensky offered to reopen talks with Mr Trump and said the first stages could include the release of prisoners and a ban on firing long-range missiles.

Sir Keir and Mr Macron, as the leaders of a European “coalition of the willing”, have been devising proposals for a settlement and post-war security guarantees alongside Kyiv that will be presented to Mr Trump as part of the efforts to win back his support.

“We are considering potentially having President Macron travel again to Washington, alongside President Zelensky and his British counterpart,” an Élysée spokesman said.

“We’re currently engaged in tight negotiations which involve the French president, as well as the entire government.”

Downing Street has yet to confirm the Prime Minister’s participation in the planned White House meeting.
After the public spat between Mr Zelensky and Mr Trump last week, the Ukrainian was advised Kyiv must show remorse for his role in the row and demonstrate he is willing to sit down for peace talks.

On Tuesday, Mr Zelensky said that Ukraine was “ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible” as he sought to defuse the tensions with Washington.

Kyiv’s European allies then advised him to sign the minerals deal set out by Mr Trump, which the Ukrainian president said he would do “at any time and in any convenient format”.

But they have also warned that these overtures are unlikely enough to convince the US president to restart weapons supplies.

“But now, Kyiv will have to show more than just for the deal itself to be signed. White House now wants to start discussing peace conditions,” a European diplomat told The Telegraph.

Mr Zelensky has been told he will have to go further than simply expressing that he supports peace and engaging with Mr Trump on possible concessions.

Last week, Mike Waltz, the US president’s national security adviser, said that Kyiv would have to cede territory to Russia as part of any settlement.

Mr Zelensky has avoided offering his support to a number of strategies set out by allies to end the three-year war because they were not backed by cast-iron security guarantees.

However, in his conciliatory message to Mr Trump, he signalled a willingness to work towards a partial, month-long ceasefire proposed by Mr Macron, an idea previously rejected by the Ukrainian.

Sources in Kyiv have told The Telegraph that while they remained optimistic the US will one day restart weapons deliveries, they are “50/50” on whether the latest plan will deliver immediate results.

Meanwhile, European leaders will gather in Brussels on Thursday for an emergency meeting of the EU Council to discuss Ukraine and continental security.

The bloc has agreed that it must significantly hike defence spending as part of a wider strategy to placate Mr Trump and keep him on side.

Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission’s president, set out plans for a €650 billion (£541.7 billion) boost to military expenditure ahead of the meeting.

EU leaders will also discuss potential post-war security guarantees for Ukraine, including possible troop deployments to deter any future attacks by Russia.

But the main strategy is to continue building up Ukraine’s armed forces to provide it with the capability to head off any potential third invasion.

Mrs von der Leyen has described this as turning Ukraine into a “steel porcupine” that is “indigestible” to invaders.
“The ‘steel porcupine’ is the first pillar of the security guarantees… in the event of a peace agreement they can be in a position where they can defend themselves where any future Russian aggression would meet such a resistance it would be quashed or not take place because it would be obvious for any aggressor it would not succeed,” a senior EU official said.

“This is the strategy and the strategy shared by a majority of member states.”

The official said that it was “premature” to discuss possible troop deployments to Ukraine because there was no ceasefire or final peace settlement on the table.

“We do not have a peace agreement. We don’t even have negotiations to achieve a ceasefire. So it is premature to already try to specify what needs to be done,” the source said.

Hungary and Slovakia, the Kremlin’s two closest allies in Europe, are understood to be holding up EU statements pledging more immediate military aid to Kyiv.

EU ambassadors meeting in Brussels early on Wednesday morning failed to agree on a complete draft text, with a “few points left open for the leaders” to sign off on Thursday, an EU diplomat said.

Opposition from Budapest and Bratislava means that there will be no mention of an EU plan to deliver between €20 billion and €30 billion of artillery ammunition, missiles and drones to Ukraine in 2025.

Haha, this is embarrassing. They are essentially thinking of chaperoning Zelensky to make sure he doesn’t end up saying anything that angers Trump again.

Making someone grovel is the type of perverted humiliation that the Tangerine Palpatine loves.
I would go there and smack him in the face in front of the world.

President Zelensky is more than that, he is willing to endure this disgusting humiliation so that he can save his country.
I hope we all let the world know on every social media post that follows this horrendous humiliation routine, just how disgusting the American people are for allowing it, and how much of a man Zelensky is for doing what it takes to help his people survive.

The weakness of America is utterly disgusting. I hope you all bow your heads in shame as your leader tries to humiliate a man live on TV.

Take this piece from the telegraph with a huge grain of salt.

      >We reported earlier on remarks from a French government spokesperson, who said Macron was considering returning to Washington DC with Starmer and Zelensky for talks.

      >**But the French presidency appears to now be playing down the prospect.**

      >The Élysée Palace says no new visit by Macron is being considered “at this stage”, AFP reports.

      >**The UK prime minister’s official spokesperson also says the French government has clarified that there are no plans for a joint trip to Washington.**

    7. Fuck Trump and fuck the USA. I don’t want Ukraine or the EU to submit to their sadistic humiliation games. The EU should dig as deep into their pockets as necessary to save Ukraine. Ally with China and whoever else necessary to beat Putin while Trump dumps the USA into isolation and depression.

    8. Sorry, busy fighting a war. Don’t have time for suit shopping. I will come back for a chat and a visit in a few years, after I have won and freed my people.

I can tell you how I won my next term, as a war hero and explain what it is like to serve the people, not one’s own interests.

Not like they can cut off funding again…..it is gone.

I am surprised that the EU leaders care so much about that person compared to their own citizens.

Speaks volumes, hope people wake up and we see reforms if not it can go as far as revolution/mutiny.

This is how you win. Strength in numbers is a strategy as old as time. Maerz, Meloni and Mette should join too.

The leader of the free world is no more. The US uses the word peace to cover the fascists intentions of it’s government.

I hope this news is true. Urkaine is Europe and it seems to be necessary to be made certain this translates into the physical world as well.

Europe is the leader of the free world now and needs to act accordingly.

      Bravo, if true.
