Does the CHP even have a path to power?
CHP Leader Özgür Özel Attends EU Council Preparatory Leaders’ Meeting
Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Özgür Özel attended the European Union Council preparatory leaders’ meeting, organized at the invitation of the Party of European Socialists. The meeting was attended by social democratic leaders, heads of state, prime ministers, and deputy prime ministers.
At the meeting, which included European Commission President António Costa, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, Özel stated:
“As the social democrats of Europe, we must lead in promoting peace and democracy. I place great importance on the European Union’s cooperation with Turkey. It was a mistake not to invite Turkey’s Foreign Minister to Paris, while the decision to invite him to London was the right one. The fact that a meeting with Erdoğan will take place this evening is also significant. Europe must stand with Turkey today and draw Turkey closer to itself.”
“Negotiations Should Be Based on Democracy”
“After coming to power, our strategy is to implement the Copenhagen criteria at lightning speed and secure EU membership. However, until that day comes, I want to emphasize the importance of conducting negotiations with Turkey on the basis of democracy and freedoms, rather than engaging in an unprincipled give-and-take relationship with Erdoğan. If negotiations are conducted through the lens of democracy, it will be an important step for both Europe and Turkey. All of Europe’s expectations and demands, as well as Turkey’s, can be addressed through a relationship built on democracy and solidarity.”
No country that has a recent history of changing laws to weaken democracy should be allowed in before we change how vetoing works.
The current vetoing system is really good for small countries like Portugal, so we are not under represented in Europe when facing world powers like France, but unfortunately it also enables countries like Hungary and Poland (until recently) to wreak havoc.
I don’t know what a better alternative is because I also don’t agree with majority vote, and super majority is also not that attractive unless it’s a big percentage like 85% of the countries (for example 23 out of 27).
I so hope they will. Turkey would be a great addition to the EU
“Its been 2 days since Turkey joined the EU and I still havent met a single Turk, but then Ive only been in Turkey for a day”
Same would happen with Ukraine.
Is there even the slightest chance of cyprus not vetoing? I mean, turkey is invading part of a eu country, but they want in the eu? Doesn’t sound even remotely possible to me.
I for one welcome Turkey to the EU if they make the cut.
So you all think Turkey is more suitable member than for example Bosnia/Montenegro/Serbia? When Turkey joins it will be end of unuon as we know it 😂
We do not have enough with hungary, now we are also going to add turkey?
If turkey joins the EU before Major reforms are enacted it Will be our death sentence.
That’s nice
Nah, Turkey will never be in the EU.
It won’t work. Politically, economically, culturally or socially.
It isn’t working already and they’re not in the EU.
No thanks. The number one issue as for why Turkey should not be in the EU is Greece.
The EU Mutual Defense Pact says EU all members must offer all aid in their power to defend another member from invasion. The pact was created because of Turkey’s aggression against Greece and Cyprus.
If Turkey becomes a member, that pact suddenly becomes useless if Turkey should ever show aggression against another EU member.
So… no thanks. Fuck off.
I wont work because if turkye would become a EU member they would have the magority in the Eu Parlament seats because they would have the bigest population.
Turkiye is located at interesting crossroads where their neighbors are either Russia, hardcore islamists, or Eu, imo between these powers they are the most aligned with Europe, maybe not tomorrow but some time in future. I dont think Eu should be elite club for white christians only, those never end well.
Now every single EU country should say “That’s nice, buts in it for me?”
Let’s see what Turkey thinks if others behave like them.
Given that we have at least 2 ( not even counting Bulgaria which isn’t as bad ) blatantly pro Trump and Russia members, I am not sure anyone will be willing to allow Turkey in, given their Erdogan history (and present).
While Hungary and Slovakia have fairly small influence on EU, a Turkey going towards a new Erdogan once they are in, could spell disaster for the EU.
Turkey has a long way to go, and the EU itself ought to reform before new members join (e.g. replace veto with something like 80% agreement), but I do believe they could eventually join the EU. I don’t like the way some people seem to categorically reject the idea of Turkish membership without even considering it.
But Turks do need to understand that at least for now, new members can be vetoed by any member state. Notably that means for example that Greece and Cyprus can veto Turkey, even if everyone else wanted them to join and Turkey met all the official requirements. So in any case, for Turkey to join the EU, they will have to come to agreements with them. That almost certainly means, for example, dropping claims towards Greek islands, and finding a solution that Cyprus accepts regarding the Turkish occupation of Northern Cyprus.
Turkey also needs to honestly face its past, starting with the recognition of the Armenian genocide. Given the ultra-nationalist mood among a lot of Turks, I am not too hopeful of that happening.
So they change, get in, lose elections and become corrupt again and now Veto everything.
Turns out Turkey’s previous choice to sour relations with the EU in the past: talking about invasion of Greece, blackmailing EU, refugee border crises, hostile talks, calling member states Nazi’s etc, comes back to bite them in their ass.
While they do have a place in the future of Europe this goes to show these moves they made in the past was very foolish of them. They have zero soft power
Turk here… How about we first implement the European Military concept before Putin decides to invade in 3 years time. Later we can talk about EU entry, etc.
The Copenhagen critieria is the Aquis, right? Good luck implementing all that in Turkey without causing an Islamic revolution 🙂
these are publicity movements but the public actually does not really care
Pretty confident Greece & Cyprus will block everything
In addition to all the other things already said in this thread, EU membership for Turkey in the next decade or so would almost certainly lead to a massive spike in anti-EU sentiment in many member states. The pro-Leave camp successfully used this exact talking point to [argue for Brexit](https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/14683849.2017.1366860) for example. Here in Austria, people have not forgotten being called [racist or islamophobic](https://kurier.at/politik/inland/erdogan-in-oesterreich-tuerkei-findet-kurz-aussage-unverantwortlich/249.043.618) by Turkish officials ([another example](https://www.politico.eu/article/turkish-minister-austria-is-capital-of-radical-racism-mevlut-cavusoglu/)) every time Austria does something that Turkey doesn’t like, for example for banning Erdogan from campaigning in Vienna. Immigration would also be a major issue, Turkish EU ascension would likely lead to tens of thousands of new immigrants from eastern Turkey, which would overwhelm our already strained immigration system. So, if our government doesn’t veto Turkish EU accession, they might as well hand over power to the FPÖ and, even worse, they risk Austria’s EU membership.
Increased cooperation could definitely benefit both sides and I’m all for it, but EU membership could cause the end of the EU. It would surprise me if the Turkish opposition actually believes that EU membership is possible and they should be honest to their voters about that.
I don’t think this is a good idea.
Turkey doesn’t have the ghost of a snowball’s chance in hell of getting into the EU on this side of 2050.
Their territorial disputes alone makes the idea a non-starter, but even if every issue with Greece and Cyprus were resolved to both parties complete satisfaction, all it takes is for one single EU country to be controlled by a right of center party and a veto is guaranteed.
The CHP party, the founding secular party in Turkey, is overwhelmingly not Muslim, much like almost 70% of Turkish youth. They have always advocated for closer relationships with Europe since Turkey’s founding. This election will be the most important for Turkey ever, even if Turkey doesn’t achieve full membership. Aligning Turkey with the Copenhagen criteria will bring tremendous benefits to Turkey. In a normalized Turkey, the main focus should be on access to the single market and visa-free travel, while also restoring quality of life and freedoms.
A stable, free, more European Turkey should be also in the interest of all Europeans.
Let’s hope the CHP wins the next elections.
It’s (in a negative way) amazing how much Turkey has changed under Erdogan when you compare it with before the AKP took power…
Let’s hope the best for our Turkish brothers.
If Turkey becomes EU member, Germany should immediately change its name to Germanistan, to accommodate 10 million Muslims who will come there the next day.
