>USA Withdraws from Planning of New Military Exercises in Europe
>The United States has informed its allies that it intends to halt its participation in the planning of upcoming military exercises in Europe, according to sources from Expressen.
>Several exercises in Sweden will be affected by this decision.
>Information remains scarce, but the decision concerns exercises in which the U.S. plays a crucial role in the overall training operations in Europe and, ultimately, in the defense of the European continent.
>According to Expressen’s sources, the halt in American planning does not apply to already scheduled exercises set to take place in 2025.
>“This concerns exercises that are currently on the ‘drawing board,’ meaning those planned for further in the future,” one of Expressen’s sources said.
>If this decision holds, Sweden and other NATO countries will have to plan exercises without U.S. participation or with only small American units involved.
>From the U.S. side, there is a desire to reduce military expenditures in Europe and allocate resources elsewhere. Trump has expressed his intent to prioritize the Indo-Pacific region, primarily to counter China.
>This stark signal from across the Atlantic is the latest indication of an expected decrease in American engagement in Europe.
>American participation in military exercises has been a frequent occurrence in Sweden long before the country joined NATO.
>The U.S. has shown particular interest in training in winter environments, but it has also participated in major, high-profile exercises and logistical operations, including troop movements—such as transporting forces by train from Narvik to Haparanda.
>The American halt in planning is news to former lieutenant colonel Joakim Paasikivi.
>“If this is true, it aligns with reports that the Pentagon does not intend to allocate more funding to European Command, African Command, and Central Command—that is, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.”
>Paasikivi says there is an American rationale behind this decision.
>“If this is accurate—which is not unlikely, given that they have spoken about reduced engagement and a focus on Indo-Pacific Command—it logically follows that they will not invest as much effort, time, and money in training in Europe.”
>Harder to Fight Together
According to Paasikivi, reduced U.S. military training in Europe will have direct consequences.
>“This naturally lowers the conditions for conducting joint operations with the Americans.”
>How important are joint exercises?
>“Exercises serve two purposes. First, they provide training in relevant terrain, typically involving snow, cold, wet, and challenging conditions. Second, they allow forces to get to know each other, which is just as important. It’s not just about shared methods but about mutual understanding. If you don’t train together, the ability to be effective in combat decreases.”
>Strong U.S. Interest in Sweden
>Paasikivi notes that there has been significant American interest in Sweden and Finland, as well as long-standing cooperation with the U.S. Marine Corps in Norway, where several hundred U.S. soldiers were previously stationed.
>In the summer of 2024, Defense Minister Pål Jonson signed a declaration of intent regarding cooperation between Sweden and the U.S. state of New York. The partnership involves Sweden’s Armed Forces and the New York National Guard within the framework of the U.S. State Partnership Program (SPP).
>“We will see what happens with the agreement and the exchange with the U.S. National Guard. That will be a clear indicator,” says Joakim Paasikivi.

Forget the USA. Trere is simply no point in having any kind of cooperation with them. The sooner European leaders realize this and start working together and arming Europe the better.

That doesn’t sound bad. Training on how to operate without the US seems very useful.

It is vitally important that Europe, the Baltics, Canada and all other countries make it clear that the US has abandoned them. This can’t be allowed to be a win win for Trump. He and his cronies will spin it saying, it was our withdrawal that forced Europe to re-arm blah blah blah. Europe needs to now stand up, re-arm and make it clear to the states that there is no easy way back for them. They abandoned us

I’m honestly trying to think of something – anything – that they can gain from the way they’re behaving. I honestly can’t. Theyre sending their economy down the shitter , alienating every ally they have (even Israel is like wtf ?) and are sucking up to Russia.

Other than the F-35, Europe needs to stop all purchases of new weapons and immediately go for domestically produced ones.
Our ground-to-air weapons are very good, and we need to develop a system comparable to AEGIS.
Our fighter jets need drastic development, though. Especially when it comes to stealth.
